Patients are more willing than ever to embrace virtual care, but there is still not enough access to meet the need. Those are some of the important findings from a recent survey by Deloitte. It’s no surprise to us at Ovatient that patients appreciate the convenience, affordability, and quality that virtual care can offer. Since opening our virtual doors earlier this year, we’ve treated almost 14,000 patients at The MetroHealth System and have received extraordinarily positive reviews. But we recognize we’re only scratching the surface of the needs that are out there. Deloitte’s survey offers a few ways health systems can step up for patients, like implementing human-centered design, ensuring equitable access and experiences, evaluating financial and operational opportunities and, of course, investing in (meaningful) tech. I’d add one more way health systems can get ahead of this increasing demand for care that combines each of the abovementioned elements - by building out patient-centered, virtual-first care models that put patients at the center of their care journeys. For health systems, the solution to lack of access should not just be using a telehealth platform to plug in when you need support. By doing the really hard work of delivering truly hybrid care that is integrated with an EMR like Epic and coordinated between virtual and in-person care teams, we can connect patients more tightly to their trusted local health systems and empower them to get care where and when they want and need it. At Ovatient, we’re focused on increasing access to care—but just as importantly, we’re focused on making sure the care patients receive is high-quality, coordinated and connected to their journeys within their health system.

I was excited to see Jason Barry’s recent coverage in Digital Health Wire about new research published in JAMA Network Open that shows increased telehealth usage in primary care can be associated with reductions in certain types of low-value services. This aligns with Ovatient’s belief that virtual-first care isn't just about convenience; it's about delivering targeted, patient-centered care without the burden of unnecessary interventions or increasing costs to patients or the healthcare system. Virtual-first care represents a fundamental shift in how healthcare is delivered - one that emphasizes accessibility, efficiency, and a deeper focus on appropriate care. However, it's essential to recognize that the relationship between telehealth and low-value care isn't straightforward. Not all low-value services are inherently more likely to be ordered when performed in-person or, for that matter, when delivered virtually. For example, imaging for conditions like uncomplicated back pain or headaches did not significantly change with telehealth usage. This is encouraging for those who perhaps had posited that telehealth would drive such use of imaging higher. I would also caution that not all healthcare organizations - especially in the digital health and virtual care space - approach clinical decision making in the same way. For virtual-first organizations like ours, we are excited to further demonstrate and explore how telehealth influences clinical decision-making and patient outcomes for good. At Ovatient, we commit to doing our part to help push this important work forward. https://lnkd.in/gbBnvdTw #VirtualFirst

  • At Ovatient, we’ve built our care model on a virtual-first foundation. But what does that really mean? Rather than treating patients in a one-off telehealth-silo, we put patients in charge of their health and give them options on when and where they get care. Because this is virtual-first care—but not virtual-only—we keep them connected to their broader care team throughout their entire health journey. Read on to learn more 👇
