OU Health is at the forefront of developing leading-edge procedures and implementing breakthrough technology to significantly improve the lives of patients with movement disorders and other neurological conditions. By adopting innovative approaches, OU Health continues to set new standards in patient care and treatment options. One such advancement is ClearPoint Neuro, Inc.'s SmartFrame OR™ platform, which revolutionizes Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) surgeries. DBS is a surgical procedure that involves implanting a neurostimulator in the brain to deliver electrical impulses, benefiting patients with movement disorders and certain other neurological conditions. The new technology enables best-in-class accurate electrode placement in the brain while patients are asleep, resulting in faster, more accurate procedures that reduce patient anxiety.

The University of Oklahoma College of Medicine has participated in a groundbreaking study that could significantly improve care for patients with subdural hematomas, a serious condition where blood pools between the skull and brain. This study, published in The New England Journal of Medicine, shows that combining traditional brain surgery with a less invasive procedure called embolization can reduce the risk of needing a second surgery by three times! Hakeem Shakir, M.D., neurosurgeon at OU Health and assistant professor of neurosurgery in the University of Oklahoma College of Medicine led the study locally, contributing to this national effort to enhance patient care. He emphasized the potential of this combined treatment to change the standard of care, particularly benefiting the aging population. This advancement highlights the importance of the clinical, research, and educational missions of OU Health and the University of Oklahoma College of Medicine.

OU Health is hosting a series of hiring events this month to recruit registered nurses and address Oklahoma's nursing shortage. The events aim to attract both experienced nurses and new graduates, with a focus on building a strong talent pipeline to support safe, high-quality patient care. Rachel Bolton, Associate Vice President of Talent Acquisition, emphasized the need for creative strategies to overcome the nursing shortage, which is particularly pressing as Oklahoma ranks 46th in nurses per capita. The shortage impacts both patient care and hospital operations, making the recruitment and retention of skilled nurses more critical than ever. The events will take place in December and January.
