Big Pharma is stepping up investments in rare diseases, with billion-dollar deals from companies like Lundbeck, Biogen, and AstraZeneca. But with 30M people in the U.S. affected—and just 2% of biotech seed funding going to rare diseases in 2023—funding remains critically low. Smaller biopharma companies like Ultragenyx and Zevra Therapeutics are finding creative ways to advance therapies, but the path is tough, with nearly 1,400 programs paused in recent years due to resource gaps.
