Breastfeeding is the BEST NUTRITIONAL START any baby can have. This week we celebrate World Breastfeeding Week which is supported by WHO, UNICEF and government agencies across the globe. GESTATIONAL DIABETES has more than tripled in Australia over the past decade according to data published by the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare. This is an alarming jump. Now, on average, 20 per cent or almost one in five pregnant women will be diagnosed with Gestational Diabetes, and if you are over 40 years of age, the incidence increases to almost 30 per cent or one in three pregnant women. Raising awareness of the incidence, implications and how to manage Gestational Diabetes is important, particularly during National Diabetes Week. Gestational Diabetes can negatively impact the unborn baby, as well as the mother, so it is extremely important that pregnant women be tested and the condition be well managed, often with the help of a dietitian or diabetic nurse educator. Having the right diet is crucial to managing Gestational Diabetes, in particular consuming low Glycemic Index (GI) foods and limiting carbohydrate intake to reduce spikes in blood glucose levels.
