Onunda has developed a unique integrated method of treating sewage and sludge by combining hydrothermal technology and gasification. The application of high temperature and pressure breaks down organic material into its constituents, recovering valuable nutrients and eliminating harmful chemicals and pathogens in the process. This is combined with sludge dewatering technologies to produce an energy-rich hydrochar which is subsequently converted into clean energy using our proven gasification technology.

The use of sludge, a byproduct of wastewater treatment processes, in agriculture poses significant risks to both human health and the environment. There is a pressing need for a sustainable alternative. Onunda’s technology uses hydrothermal carbonization, which utilises waste heat and autogenous pressure to convert sewage and other organic wastes into their constituent elements: carbon-rich hydrochar and nutrient-rich liquor.
