Dr. Brooklyn Raney's new book, Adult Advocates, as part of the AMLE Successful Middle Schools series, is now available! One of the eighteen characteristics of a successful middle school is that "every student's academic and personal development is guided by an adult advocate." Historically, teaching was thought of as a combination of information dispensing, child care, and test prep. But any effective teacher, coach, or advisor today knows that if knowledge and skill building are to have a chance of sticking, educators need to do a lot more than just dispense information and keep students in their seats. We now recognize that relationships are at the heart of effective teaching and learning. Essential to education is a trusted connection between an informed, healthy adult and a secure, motivated young person. This book is for anyone and everyone who cares about middle grades students. Filled with research and real-world stories, theoretical frameworks, and implementable strategies, you will find everything you need for ensuring you are building the right kind of relationships with youth that best support positive academic and developmental outcomes in youth and keep your work safe and sustainable! Love seeing photos like this one! Cayman International School implementing the first part of the BeBold High School Advisory Program - Branch Out. Before students decide for themselves who their trusted school adults are, advisory programs assign them an adult with the intention that a connection and trust will grow. There's no guarantee that the match will be perfect, but by pairing a staff member with a student, advisory programs signal to students that relationships at this school matter and that students have a specific caring person they can go to with questions or concerns. Advisory programs take different shapes in different schools, but generally, advisory time is intended as a respite, a touch point, and a launchpad that allows every student to experience at least one period a week where an adult is available, offering support, listening, and playing rather than assigning or grading. The problem? The advisors want and need quality curriculum and training! Which is exactly what we do at One Trusted Adult. Check out this blog to read the top 11 strategies for facilitating successful advisory meetings. And go to our website to learn more about BeBold and other tools, training, and programs we provide that strengthen connectedness and community in schools. https://lnkd.in/eQnCQqBc

I desperately miss working in schools. I miss the community. I miss being a part of young people’s journeys. I miss the memorable moments with colleagues. I miss the rhythm, the energy, the growth, and the joy. 🚌📚📆🏫 And then I am reminded of the importance of what I am doing as a researcher, writer, and speaker. Little hints like this one show up and reveal that the strategies, programs, and tools that we have developed, and train on, at One Trusted Adult are making a difference. We are supporting and working with over 260 schools in 28 states and 13 countries. 🤩 💫 We are helping to reset roles and relationships. 💫Helping to improve advisory and mentorship programs. 💫Assisting in ensuring that the expectations of school adults are healthy and sustainable. 💫Working to make certain that every child feels that there is an adult at school that they can trust. 💫Supporting efforts to increase belonging and a sense of community. All of this with a focus on the ultimate goal of best supporting academic and developmental outcomes in youth. While I miss day to day school life, I am so fortunate to get to partner with so many incredible school leaders, staff, and students from around the world. And I love getting tagged in photos like this one to remind me of the important work we are doing. Don't miss this free webinar with OTA Founder, Brooklyn Raney!
Researcher, Writer, Keynote Speaker, Mentor, Author of One Trusted Adult: How to Build Strong Connections and Healthy Boundaries with Young People
📚 There is clear alignment in academic literature that care and connection in schools matter. When students feel a sense of connection and care in their classrooms, their availability for learning and engagement increases. ❓But where the literature lacks clarity and alignment is in the details, definitions, and limits of appropriate and beneficial teacher care for students. And add to that, a mental health crisis in youth, ongoing effects of the pandemic, parent rights debates, and high rates of teacher burnout are all adding confusion to something that already lacked clarity. ⭐️ But there is hope! Through professional development focused on the balance of trust and boundaries, advisory programming, student leadership training, connection assessments, and the teaching of care expectations to youth, we can design school climates that prioritize the kind of healthy teacher-student relationships that prevent our biggest worries and promote our greatest hopes. 🖥 Join me for a 30-minute webinar that outlines strategies, programs, and new ideas for supporting middle and high school educators in building trusted (and boundaried) relationships with students and increasing overall school connectedness. 🔗 Register here: https://lnkd.in/eSTMrVZg #schoolconnectedness #schoolclimate #schoolleaders #teachercare
