  • 📰 Could upskilling be the reason people are staying at their jobs? 📰 26% of workers cite the opportunity to learn and gain skills in their job as a reason for staying with their current organization, according to KPMG US's latest annual survey. The findings also show that majorities (50%+) of the 1800 survey respondents are using AI and automation in their jobs and believe it has improved their professional skills and career opportunities; large majorities (70%+) of employees also expect and demand flexibility in their work arrangements.   • 🚀 MUST READ: Generative AI is transforming work at "unprecedented" speeds. 🚀 Writing jobs have decreased the most, followed by software development and design; upskilling will be essential for all businesses and individuals. *********** In a study soon to be published in the journal Management Science by researchers at Imperial College London, the authors analyzed more than 1 million freelance job postings to see how the adoption of gen AI tools like ChatGPT, DALL-E 2 and Midjourney has already impacted the job market. The results were staggering, although probably not surprising for anyone who has been paying close attention. THE BAD NEWS (for employees): FEWER JOBS, MORE COMPETITION -- Writing jobs were affected the most (30.37% decrease), followed by software, app, and web development (20.62%) and engineering (10.42%). -- Demand for graphic design and 3D modeling freelancers decreased by 17.01% -- Compared to traditional automation technologies, the authors say that "the speed and extent of gen AI's effect are unprecedented." THE BRIGHT SIDE: HIGHER WTP, AND MORE GEN AI JOBS -- Opportunities for workers with "gen AI" skills are increasing, with an average increase of 0.68 posts per week since its introduction. -- Employers are now requiring more complexity for automation-prone jobs, and are willing to pay more -- about 5.71% more. *********** THE MAIN TAKEAWAYs FOR BUSINESSES: From the study authors: "This shift necessitates the creation of learning and development initiatives tailored to the new AI-driven economy. In the long run, companies that embrace upskilling and reskilling initiatives will be better positioned to thrive in a gen AI-driven landscape. By preparing their workforce for the increasing complexity of tasks and fostering adaptability, businesses can remain competitive in the face of technological change."
