Hauʻoli Lā Hānau e Bernice Pauahi Pāki Bishop, born on December 19, 1831, to high chiefs Abner Pākī and Laura Kōnia. Throughout her life, Pauahi witnessed the decline of the Native Hawaiian people and culture. She dedicated her estate "to erect and maintain in the Hawaiian Islands two schools...one for boys and one girls, to be known as, and called the Kamehameha Schools.” We honor her legacy today and always ❤️ #olamaui #pauahi #bernicepauahibishop #hawaiianhistory #hawaii

#WahiPana | ʻUlupalakua Ranch was established in 1845 and once spanned 40,000 acres. It was used for crop farming and transitioned through six owners before becoming the ranch we know today. Paniolo (Hawaiian cowboys) have long been a part of ʻUlupalakua’s story. Before the American "Wild West," paniolo were wrangling cattle in Hawaiʻi, crafting their own saddles and gear. They even developed kī hōʻalu, or slack-key guitar, a distinctly Hawaiian open-tuning style. Among the many legendary paniolo was Ikua Purdy, who famously won the steer-roping contest at Frontier Days, the world’s largest rodeo, in Cheyenne, Wyoming. ʻUlupalakua Ranch now spans 18,000 acres and continues to be a proud home to Hawaiʻi’s paniolo heritage. #olamaui #maui #mauicommunity #mauinokaoi #hawaiianculture #ulupalakua #ulupalakuaranch #paniolo

Lā Kūʻokoʻa, observed on November 28, is a day of profound historical and cultural significance for Hawaiʻi. On this date in 1843, Hawaiʻi achieved formal recognition as an independent nation by Britain and France through the Anglo-Franco Proclamation. This marked Hawaiʻi as a sovereign entity in the global community—a testament to the leadership of King Kamehameha III and the dedication of Hawaiian diplomats. Today, Lā Kūʻokoʻa is a time to reflect on the resilience and sovereignty of the Hawaiian Kingdom and its people. It reminds us of the importance of honoring Hawaiian independence, history, and the values that continue to guide our lāhui. It is also a call to mālama ʻāina, perpetuate culture, and strengthen our collective identity. At OLA Maui, we celebrate this day by holding space for remembrance, dialogue, and action. As we continue to navigate challenges, Lā Kūʻokoʻa inspires us to reaffirm our commitments to aloha ʻāina, self-determination, and unity. May we always honor the legacy of those who fought for Hawaiʻi’s independence and carry their wisdom and courage forward. #WahiPana | Puʻu Kekaʻa was also known as “ka leina o ka ʻuhane,” meaning the leap of the soul. Puʻu Kekaʻa was considered a place where souls would transition from the physical world to the spiritual realm. The area witnessed numerous battles, as warriors sought to be in the right place for their souls to leap into eternity. Kahekili, the last ruling chief of Maui from 1766 to 1793, was renowned for his lele kawa, or cliff jumping, often leaping from heights of 300 to 400 feet into the sea. His fearless jumps from Puʻu Kekaʻa earned him the respect of many warriors. PC: Hawaiʻi Magazine #olamaui #maui #mauicommunity #mauinokaoi #hawaiianculture #puukekaa #kaanapali #kahekili
