About us
Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) is a national construction industry trade association representing nearly 22,000 chapter members. Founded on the merit shop philosophy, ABC help members develop people, win work and deliver that work safely, ethically, profitably and for the betterment of the communities in which ABC and its members work. We are small family firms, specialty organizations, as well as medium sized companies and large corporations. We are local, regional and we are national with 68 ABC chapters representing over 22,000 firms. While our member sizes and specialties vary, we are united in the belief that America was built on free market principles and that all work should be awarded to solely on the basis of the best value proposition offered (i.e. on the merits of the organization’s offer).

The construction industry is facing a critical labor shortage, with over half a million workers needed in 2024 alone. In a recent survey, 58% of commercial and industrial contractors reported their workforce shortage as “severe” or “very severe,” citing an exodus of baby boomers as the top contributor. The solution is to drive more young people into the industry, but how do we do that? With apprenticeships and workforce development programs. ABC Ohio Valley proudly partners with Ohio Valley Construction Education Foundation and The TOOLS Program Foundation to address this issue in southwest Ohio and northern Kentucky. OVABC and OVCEF currently work with over 70 contractors to educate more than 270 apprentices throughout the region. The apprenticeship program equips these students— the next generation of construction professionals— with the skills to build their careers and our communities. It’s also crucial to establish enduring pipelines to continuously supply the industry with workers. The TOOLS Program Foundation addresses this need by working with K-12 students in the region to demonstrate the value of a construction career. TOOLS directly supports the movement of new hires into the industry by connecting students with contractors and providing scholarships that support students in the school-to-career transition. During National Apprenticeship Week, we celebrate the programs that help build the future of our industry.
