"Through the decades, the Hall of Science has been a platform for innovation and for the celebration of the opportunity to learn out of school... ...What I think is a particular opportunity right now is the understanding that not only developing PhDs and college graduates into PhD-level jobs is important, but also those skills, those competencies that are part of STEM careers, are really now part of every career, whether it’s in government, whether it’s in retail, whether it’s in publishing, certainly technology sectors - so these are skills that everyone needs to really be an active participant in society.” - Lisa Gugenheim, CEO and President of the New York Hall of Science, spoke with Ronnie Eldridge of Keeping Relevant on CUNY TV about the New York Hall of Science’s history and where it might go in the future. About us
Since its founding at the 1964-65 New York World’s Fair, the New York Hall of Science (NYSCI) has inspired millions of people—children, teachers, and families– by offering creative, participatory ways to learn and encouraging people to explore their curiosity and nurture their creativity. Located in Queens, the most ethnically diverse county in the country, NYSCI welcomes 500,000 visitors each year and serves thousands more through outreach in schools, teacher professional development, and participation in a variety of public events and research initiatives. NYSCI is a leader in the science museum field, recognized for its highly regarded exhibitions, programs, and products, all of which are informed by strategies of engagement called Design, Make, Play. The defining characteristics of Design, Make, Play — open-ended exploration, imaginative learning, personal relevance, deep engagement, and delight — are the ingredients that inspire passionate science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) learners. NYSCI engages diverse communities of learners, particularly young people, in STEM, by fostering the excitement of self-directed exploration and by tapping into the joy of learning intrinsic in young people’s play. Our transformative model for STEM exploration invites broad participation and makes engagement and learning irresistible. NYSCI has approximately 80 full-time and over 65 part-time staff members.

What an incredible night at NYSCI’s STEM Night: "Snowless Winters? Unwrapping Climate Change!" 🌍 ❄️ We were thrilled to welcome high school and college-aged students to explore the intersections of climate change, sustainability, and community resilience. The event was a huge success, thanks to our amazing panelists: - Dr. Karen Pearson (Fashion Institute of Technology) - Swathi Manchikanti (she/her) (UNICEF) - Jaileen Jaquez (Black Girls CODE) - Laila Shaaban (Columbia University Climate School) Their insights into climate challenges and solutions left a lasting impression on everyone in the room. A big thank you to the organizations that brought hands-on activities and resources to life, including Rutgers University Center for Ocean Observing Leadership (RUCOOL), NYC Mayor's Office of Climate & Environmental Justice, Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory, Columbia Climate School, DoSomething.org, Student Conservation Association, and The Brotherhood Sister Sol. From exploring green infrastructure to learning about ocean gliders and the importance of community-driven climate action, the energy in the room was truly inspiring. We’re so proud of the work our Explainers put into leading STEM demos this night and engaging with attendees throughout the evening. It’s moments like these that remind us why STEM education and empowerment matter so much. A special thank you to the amazing team - Laura Velázquez, Shihadah S. and Danny Clase - for their ongoing, hard work and dedication to making these STEM events for youth happen. Another huge thank you to Kevin Cunningham for capturing the incredible night with your amazing photography! Stay tuned for more exciting STEM events in 2025! 🚀✨
