Nyaka works with communities to nurture and protect children so they can learn, grow, and thrive.

About us

Nyaka is a locally-led NGO providing community-based solutions to address the needs of orphaned and vulnerable children in rural Southwest Uganda. Nyaka was founded in 2001, beginning as a small two-room schoolhouse for 55 orphaned children. In just 20 years it has grown into a unique, holistic model to help orphaned and vulnerable children in rural Uganda escape poverty. When the community identifies a child in need, Nyaka looks to find a solution. Nyaka surrounds each child with a complete support system. This system consists of interrelated programs developed and led by the community, where children are nurtured and protected so they can learn, grow, and thrive. Nyaka currently serves an estimated 80,000 orphaned and vulnerable children as well as 20,000 grandmothers. Nyaka has built three schools and introduced numerous programs to give children the best chance at success. Programs include a clean water system, nutrition program, grandmother program, community libraries, health clinics, and an SGBV program, which combats sexual and domestic violence. These programs work together to provide an all-comprehensive community to surround orphaned and vulnerable children.

Yesterday, I had the privilege of spending the afternoon with a group of incredible women from #RukigaDistrict as we prepare to launch our #NyakaGrannies program in the area. A huge thank you to Dr. Sylvia for helping to bring so many amazing women together. The Nyaka AIDS Orphans Project has been transforming lives since 2000. Six years later, we recognized a critical gap in our support for beneficiary children who lacked guardians. This realization led to the creation of our grandmother program, which has since expanded to support over 23,000 grandmothers across three districts in rural southwest Uganda. These remarkable women care for more than 92,148 children who have been orphaned by HIV. Our program provides comprehensive training, access to microfinance, and support to start small businesses, empowering these grandmothers to acquire new skills, generate income, and provide essential care, education, and medical support to their children. As we continue to grow and expand our reach, I want to express my heartfelt gratitude to our loyal supporters. Your unwavering commitment to our cause has enabled us to make a meaningful impact in the lives of these remarkable grandmothers and their children. While we have ambitious plans for further expansion, we're mindful of our capacity and the need to ensure sustainability. As the saying goes, "you can't run before you can walk." We're often asked to expand our reach, but we're committed to doing so in a responsible and phased manner. I'm thrilled to report that our interactive afternoon with the grandmothers from Rukiga District was a resounding success. If all goes according to plan, we'll soon be launching our program in Rukiga, bringing hope and support to even more families in need. Just like the millennials from home area say; Rukiga District, Tujja! Nyaka

On December 17th, I had the privilege of attending Nyaka's corporate breakfast, which served as a fundraising event. Founded in 2001 by Twesigye Jackson Kaguri, Nyaka focuses on community-based solutions to support orphaned and vulnerable children in rural southwestern Uganda. Each child is enveloped in a holistic support system, featuring interconnected programs designed and executed by the community, where children are nurtured and safeguarded, enabling them to learn, grow, and flourish. The event's theme was ‘Light a Life,’ and I was grateful for the opportunity to share my thoughts on illuminating a life. I referenced the significance of light as depicted in the creation narrative from the Bible, beginning with the proclamation, “Let there be light.” If you’d like to give to the transformational work of Nyaka, please reach out to them and help to ‘Light a Life’!
