🚨 “Bringing down the system so people cannot work is half the attack. The other half is selling the data.” - Jack Danahy, VP of Strategy and Strategic Services at NuHarbor Security. Ransomware attacks are evolving, and disruption is just the beginning. Attackers are no longer satisfied with locking systems—they’re exfiltrating sensitive data to sell or leak it for added leverage. Wood County’s recent attack highlights a harsh reality: public-facing organizations, especially government entities, are frequent targets because their transparency—contact information, operations, and schedules—is easily exploited to create convincing phishing campaigns. ✅ The takeaway? Quick response and recovery aren’t enough anymore. Organizations need: - Proactive employee training to prevent phishing attacks - Robust monitoring to detect anomalies early - Strategies to mitigate the second phase of an attack: data theft Wood County officials responded swiftly to limit disruption, but the fight doesn’t end there. Cybersecurity today means preparing for every phase of the attack. 🛡️ Is your organization ready for what comes next? Take control of your privacy with this one small step. 📲 Jack Danahy, VP of Strategy and Strategic Services at NuHarbor Security, highlights the importance of encrypted messaging: "we've really made a lot of progress in helping this become less of a threat, but there's still more work to do." With the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) urging Americans to adopt end-to-end encryption, it's clear that secure communication is more important than ever. A Denver judge recently ruled against the Libertarian Party’s request to hand-count ballots in Colorado after passwords for voting systems were leaked online. While the leak didn’t compromise election security, experts like NuHarbor's own Jack Danahy emphasize that the leak is "a very serious concern", more so for the failure of protocols and lack of airtight security than the integrity of the systems. Jack expresses that “there are many gates you have to go through [to access machines]…Defensive depth is very, very important, and I think the state of Colorado did a pretty good job of that.” 🔑This incident highlights the importance of layered security and robust protocols in protecting against potential vulnerabilities.
