☢️ You Shouldn’t be Afraid of Nuclear Waste
On Saturday, before the New Mexico State football game, NARO members stood outside the stadium, engaging with the public about nuclear waste. Many people approached us thinking nuclear waste was something out of the Simpsons—green, glowing goo. But after chatting with us, they learned the reality is far different.
Nuclear waste, while often misunderstood, is carefully managed and regulated to ensure safety. 90% of nuclear waste (by volume) is simply material that has had the potential of coming in contact with radioactive materials (i.e. rags, towels, or gloves). The "scary" stuff only makes up 3% by volume and is just Uranium metal rods that have spent 18-24 months providing clean, carbon-free electricity.
The truth is nuclear waste is the most secure form of energy byproduct. Our conversations aimed to demystify the subject and replace the images of green goo in people’s minds with the real thing.
It's crucial to educate the public and shift the NAROtive around nuclear waste. It's not about fear; it's about facts and finding sustainable solutions for the future. Let's keep the conversation going.
