What if you could turn the real-world into a gameboard? This is what guides our work building the fundamental spatial computing technologies that will make this possible, at world-scale. And, this includes our Visual Positioning System (VPS), which processes millions of 3D scans of real-world locations to enable precise localization and spatial anchoring of AR content a degree of magnitude better than GPS. And today, we're excited to roll out Pokémon Playgrounds to more cities around the world, powered by our VPS, to offer even more ways to share adventures in Pokémon GO with other Trainers. You can read more about our VPS and Pokémon Playgrounds in the blog post by our engineering team: https://lnkd.in/gGHGAw3J

"I’ve been working in 3D graphics for 38 years now, and I don’t think we’ve seen anything this transformative since real-time texture mapping in 1991." - Niantic SVP of Engineering, Brian McClendon. We're all in on Gaussian splatting, and we’re inviting everyone in 3D graphics to join us on this journey. That's why we're open-sourcing SPZ, a format we developed that compresses 3D Gaussian splats by 90% with virtually no loss in visual quality. This is just the beginning, and we can’t wait to see the creative innovations the community will bring to life.
The most transformative 3D graphics innovation in decades now has a purpose-built file format. SPZ shrinks 3D Gaussian splats about 90% compared to PLY files, with virtually no perceptible loss in visual quality. Niantic, Inc. developed the technology, and it's now open source. Smaller files (roughly 25 MB, compared to 250 MB) make download and upload much faster (especially important on a mobile network), and take up a lot less of your device's storage and memory. It's a big part of how Scaniverse makes on-device splat processing and rendering possible. Learn more at the blog post linked in comments. We can't wait to see how the community puts SPZ to use!
