"For repeat founders, easy money can lead to a trap of early false positives... you may find yourself stuck with an 'ok but not great' idea and the burden of a company that you aren’t that excited about building. This predicament occurs for a few reasons: 1. Great ideas are often refined by struggle: by jumping straight to a large round out of the gate, you miss out on some of the refining fire that you probably experienced in your first company 🥊 2. Your own conviction and dedication to the idea are solidified: when things get tough early on, you are forced to ask yourself whether you really believe in this business and can’t help but dedicate your energies behind this problem 💯 3. Better execution can mask underlying problems: repeat founders tend to execute better, which can lead to a false sense of PMF, premature scaling, and lost agility down the road 👀 So, what does one do as a repeat founder? Here are a couple ideas: First, even if you raised a large seed out of the gate, be super conservative with your burn until you are sure of PMF ❤️🔥 Second, you want to have a really high bar for what PMF looks like 🧺 Third, you want to work with investors who are along for the twists and turns 🗺️ Finally, be willing to pull the plug early 🔌" More from NextView Partner Rob Go here: https://lnkd.in/e_xrwKRr #founders #repeatfounders #venturecapital #startups

Congrats to Doug Safreno, Daniel C. Liem, Vivek Nair, and the entire Gentrace team on closing out their $8M Series A 👏 Gentrace continues to move LLM testing forward, and we couldn't be more proud to back their vision for the future 🤖 Sky's the limit 🚀
Big news today: Gentrace raised our $8M Series A led by Kojo Osei at Matrix. We’re celebrating by launching Experiments, the first collaborative testing environment for LLM product development. This year, we’ve helped our customers like Quizlet, Webflow, and Multiverse ship incredible LLM products. The one thing slowing everyone down? Evals. You can’t get to production without them, but they’re too hard to build and maintain. We’re changing that. Our customers grew testing by 40x adopting Gentrace because of our approach that connects a collaborative testing environment to your actual application code. Now PMs and engineers can work together to build evals that actually work. It’s a massive improvement to testing that ultimately makes generative AI products more reliable for everyone. This journey wouldn’t have been possible without our awesome angel investors: Yuhki Yamashita, Garrett Lord, Bryant Chou, Tuomas Artman, Martin Mao, David Cramer, Ben Sigelman, Steve Bartel, Cai GoGwilt, Linda Tong, Cristina Cordova, and many more. Thank you to our customers and team for believing in what we’re building! Every day, we’re inspired to make generative AI apps better because of your support.

"Given the reality of what’s happened in a startup’s past, what’s a founder to do if their fundraising or building journey is longer than expected? The best way to address excessive resources utilized when you’ve been at it a while is to clearly and explicitly reframe a “reset” as the new starting point of the company." - NextView Partner, David Beisel 🎯 More from NextView's blog here: https://lnkd.in/dKU93qSE

“By analyzing similar cases and likely arguments, Theo Ai's data model estimates the probability of winning a case, in addition to predicting the estimated award.” Congrats to portfolio company, Theo Ai, on the announcement of their pre-seed round, which we were honored to co-lead with our friends at nvp capital. We’re excited to partner with Patrick Ip, Alex Alben, and the rest of this stellar team to advance legal outcome prediction with AI! More from GeekWire here: https://lnkd.in/dwD6iP9C

Go Theo, go 🚀
🚀 $2.2M Pre-Seed Announcement 🚀 We’re thrilled to announce our $2.2M pre-seed round, led by NextView Ventures (Rob Go, Melody Koh) and nvp capital (Skylar Dorosin, Daniel Borok), with participation from Ripple Ventures (Dominic Lau, Matt Cohen, Katie Ko), Beat Ventures (Dave Anderson, Colin Rogister) and SCVC Fund. Why Start Another Venture? This is my third start-up and my son, Theo, was just six months old, when I made the decision to jump back in. What tipped the scales for me was looking at both of my father figures: my dad and father-in-law. Both of them started their career-defining ventures after their first child. When I was a few years old, my dad bought a watermelon farm in central California (a place where we knew no one) to pursue his dream of building a golf course (even though he had no prior experience). We uprooted from San Francisco, and our family worked tirelessly to make it a success. We owned and ran the golf course for nearly 20+ years. My father-in-law, after completing his PhD in Sweden, moved to Georgia to start his family. There, he developed a groundbreaking patent for removing ink from paper, which became the foundation of a company that eventually went public. They've inspired me to execute at the highest level, and being a Dad has given me even more clarity, focus and velocity. I can only hope that Theo AI becomes something career-defining for me, just as their ventures were for them. Why Legal? After Catalog, I attended UCLA Law where I met Professor Alex Alben. Together, we co-wrote a paper on AI and its implication for the US and then co-founded the AI Forum, a 501c3 where we interviewed industry experts on AI and law. When I moved back to the Bay Area after graduation, I shared Theo AI with a new neighbor. He told me about the anxiety, stress, and uncertainty he endured during years of litigation, not knowing whether pursuing his case was the right decision. He said he wished he’d had a solution like Theo AI—to either give him the confidence to continue or let him know it wasn’t worth pursuing. Our mission is simple: to build the world’s most accurate legal prediction engine, empowering businesses and individuals to make informed decisions about whether litigation is worth it. Thank you It takes a community to grow a start-up, and I’m deeply grateful to our incredible team: Alex Alben, Tiago Luchini, Ariel C, Justin Krivda, MA, Sofia Viel, Alan Pogrebinschi, Manu Maurette, Robert Martorana, Steven Rosston, Max Littledale, Brian Jonathan Meier, Tomas Giampaoletti, Jon Koehmstedt and many others.

"A few years ago, I published a post on how we make decisions and vote at NextView. When we record our votes, we also score each company based on five attributes: 1. Team 👥 2. 10X Better, Faster, Cheaper / Accumulating Returns to Scale 📈 3. PMF Risk 🎲 4. Market 🧺" Full blog post from NextView Partner Rob Go here: https://lnkd.in/d3sJyHbx
