Join us in welcoming Leah Rambo as our new president! No stranger to making history, Leah is the first woman of color and tradeswoman to serve as president of NEW. Most recently, she served as the Deputy Director of the U.S. Department of Labor Women’s Bureau. Leah’s experience has prepared her to support NEW in creating more opportunities for women in the construction trades, leading to increased economic independence and a more diverse workforce. Over our history, we have increased the number of women in construction trades from two to seven percent, but we have much more work to do. Leah comes to NEW with an outstanding track record of fostering equity and inclusion within the construction workforce. Her experience, expertise, and passion position her as an ideal leader to guide NEW, say Maureen A. Henegan and Steven Sommer, co-chairs of the NEW Board of Directors. Hard Hats. Strong Women. Building the Future.
About us
Hard Hats. Strong Women. Building the Future. Nontraditional Employment for Women (NEW) prepares, trains, and places women in careers in the skilled construction, utility, and maintenance trades, helping women achieve economic independence and a secure future. Founded in 1978, NEW is a sector-based workforce development program that prepares women for careers in the construction, transportation, energy, and facilities maintenance industries. NEW focuses on skilled, unionized jobs in the trades with starting wages averaging $15 per hour, benefits, and a path to higher-wage employment. NEW primarily serves low-income minority women from all five boroughs in New York City. These careers enable NEW graduates to provide a secure future for themselves and their families. Since 2005, NEW has placed over 725 graduates with 32 different regional unions, including 28 in New York City. NEW’s relationships with apprentice directors are strengthened further as NEW continues to refer qualified and successful candidates to each trade. As a result, the Carpenters, Laborers, and Operating Engineers apprenticeship programs each have over 15 percent tradeswomen. In addition, NEW graduates have been placed in over 700 positions in the construction, energy, transportation, green, and facilities maintenance industries.

On Friday, December 13, NEW President Leah Rambo participated in NYPD Foundation’s Options youth program’s Trade Talk. With an audience of approximately 60 high-school students, many of whom are girls, the talk provided an incredible opportunity for young people to engage with trade professionals and explore various career paths. This inspiring event helped broaden horizons and create new possibilities for our youth. A big thank you to the NYC Police Foundation for making it all possible!
