ScaleDem takes off! 🎬 #ScaleDem is a bold new Horizon Europe project focused on scaling democratic innovations across Europe and beyond. With Nets4Dem as its sister project and Democracy Reporting International coordinating synergies between them, ScaleDem is designed to take proven democratic solutions out of the lab and into the real world. This is because democratic innovations are flourishing, but too many remain isolated in pilot stages. ScaleDem tackles this challenge by creating pathways for these solutions to: 🌍 Spread and impact more people (scaling out) 🌱 Embed deeply in culture (scaling deep) 🏛️ Maintain strong policy impact (scaling high) 🔬 Ensure quality in processes (scaling in) This project wouldn’t be possible without collaboration. With 13 partners and Nets4Dem’s strong network, we’re excited to see ScaleDem unlock the potential of innovations, ensuring they’re accessible, impactful, and ready to shape the future of governance - learn more here: https://bit.ly/4iI88BI

Building a new Europe around common values was not just about changing laws, it also meant building an idea of unity and togetherness amongst the different countries and cultures of the continent, recognising that ‘Europeanness’ brought with it a common heritage and history. Today, we are celebrating 70 years since the European Culture Convention was opened for signature #OnThisDay in Paris to encourage the study of languages, history and civilisation and celebrate all of Europe’s cultural diversity. #EuropeanHistory #EuropeForCulture #CouncilOfEurope

📸 A few pictures from last week's Nets4Dem Democracy Retreat in Brussels, co-organised by TEPSA and EGMONT - Royal Institute for International Relations👉 policy-makers, experts and researchers joined us for our morning discussion on the European Democracy Shield, a new, vital component of the EU’s ongoing #democracy efforts. Stay tuned for our next publication, our Democracy Highlights! 💡 The Democracy Shield is a proposal made by European Commission’s President von der Leyen and integrated within the new European Commission, which aims to promote resilience in democratic governance by addressing external threats and enhancing EU’s capacity to address #disinformation and malign influences. Under the Chatham House Rule, the retreat began with a session titled “Innovating Democracy Together,” moderated by Anthony Zacharzewski, President of Democratic Society. The discussion focused on strategies for the Shield and provided a timely opportunity to review proposals from civil society, think tanks and academia across Europe. Contributions included insights from challenging democratic contexts, such as Hungary, alongside perspectives from the Brussels-based ecosystem. The session also incorporated valuable input from the European Commission. We couldn't ask for better news to close the year. Welcome #ScaleDem! 👋 In a new #HorizonEurope project, 13 expert organisations, including some of our members, will collaborate to scale up democratic innovations in Europe. We can't wait to embark on this journey 🧭 with you! Check how #ScaleDem plans to advance democratic innovations 👇
Head of Research @ Missions Publiques | Citizen Participation | Democratic innovations | Deliberation beyond borders
🌟 𝐂𝐥𝐨𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐘𝐞𝐚𝐫 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐚 𝐒𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐬𝐡!🌊 As 2024 winds down, I’m thrilled to share an exciting new venture with Missions Publiques: the launch of our first coordinated 𝐇𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐳𝐨𝐧 𝐄𝐮𝐫𝐨𝐩𝐞 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐣𝐞𝐜𝐭, #ScaleDem! It all began two years ago with discussions on fragmentation, impact, and systems. Not totally sure why, but somehow, those conversations led us to the Fibonacci sequence. 𝐹𝑜𝑟 𝑡ℎ𝑜𝑠𝑒 𝑤ℎ𝑜 𝑎𝑟𝑒𝑛'𝑡 𝑚𝑎𝑡ℎ 𝑎𝑓𝑖𝑐𝑖𝑜𝑛𝑎𝑑𝑜𝑠, 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝐹𝑖𝑏𝑜𝑛𝑎𝑐𝑐𝑖 𝑠𝑒𝑞𝑢𝑒𝑛𝑐𝑒 𝑖𝑠 𝑎 𝑠𝑒𝑟𝑖𝑒𝑠 𝑜𝑓 𝑛𝑢𝑚𝑏𝑒𝑟𝑠 𝑤ℎ𝑒𝑟𝑒 𝑒𝑎𝑐ℎ 𝑛𝑢𝑚𝑏𝑒𝑟 𝑖𝑠 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑠𝑢𝑚 𝑜𝑓 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑡𝑤𝑜 𝑝𝑟𝑒𝑐𝑒𝑑𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑜𝑛𝑒𝑠: 0, 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13... 𝐼𝑡'𝑠 𝑟𝑒𝑛𝑜𝑤𝑛𝑒𝑑 𝑓𝑜𝑟 𝑖𝑡𝑠 𝑒𝑥𝑝𝑜𝑛𝑒𝑛𝑡𝑖𝑎𝑙 𝑔𝑟𝑜𝑤𝑡ℎ 𝑡𝑜𝑤𝑎𝑟𝑑 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑔𝑜𝑙𝑑𝑒𝑛 𝑟𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑜, "φ," 𝑜𝑓𝑡𝑒𝑛 𝑠𝑒𝑒𝑛 𝑎𝑠 𝑎 𝑠𝑦𝑚𝑏𝑜𝑙 𝑜𝑓 ℎ𝑎𝑟𝑚𝑜𝑛𝑦 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑏𝑎𝑙𝑎𝑛𝑐𝑒. 🌀 Just like the Fibonacci sequence, #ScaleDem aims to 𝐬𝐜𝐚𝐥𝐞 𝐝𝐞𝐦𝐨𝐜𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐜 𝐢𝐧𝐧𝐨𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐞𝐱𝐩𝐨𝐧𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲 striving toward φ: that point where democratic innovations are not only spreadout (“𝒔𝒄𝒂𝒍𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒐𝒖𝒕”), but also deeply rooted in political cultures, hearts, and minds (“𝒔𝒄𝒂𝒍𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒅𝒆𝒆𝒑”), without sacrificing policy impact (“𝒔𝒄𝒂𝒍𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒉𝒊𝒈𝒉”) nor quality (“𝒔𝒄𝒂𝒍𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒊𝒏”). (➡️: https://lnkd.in/dGpF9acr) 🎯 Now, imagine that each number in this sequence is itself an evidenced-based innovation, there for the taking. To reach φ, #ScaleDem will build on the hundreds of insights developed in 𝐩𝐚𝐬𝐭 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐣𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐬. 🚀 Simply put, #ScaleDem will act as a 𝐥𝐚𝐮𝐧𝐜𝐡𝐩𝐚𝐝 for those solutions, enabling their operationalisation and replication elsewhere, and supporting their uptake through a generous 𝐟𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐬𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐦𝐞. 🤝 None of this would be possible without 𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩𝐬. With our sister project Nets4Dem and an incredible community of people committed to reimagining democracy, we’ve already started building bridges, and we hope many more will join. Over the past months, we’ve brought together 𝟏𝟑 𝐟𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐜 𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐬. It’s been a journey filled with learning and inspiring exchanges already, and I couldn’t be prouder of the incredible teamwork that made this possible. We are all well aware of the challenges ahead—research can be scattered, funding is often hard to secure, and political barriers are many. Still, we hope #ScaleDem marks a significant step forward, and look forward to seeing how this adventure unfolds in the coming years. In the meantime, I wish you all a wonderful end to the year and an amazing start to 2025! Let’s keep dreaming big 🕊️ ✨
