NATIONAL COALITION FOR HOMELESS VETERANS

Have i mentioned lately that i am lucky to work with a powerhouse Board of Directors at the NATIONAL COALITION FOR HOMELESS VETERANS? Our Board Secretary Cathrene "Cat" Nichols was recently profiled in the The Spokesman-Review for heading up a unique (in the very best way possible) State-County veterans center in Spokane, WA. Cat happens to be the energizer bunny of our board and someone whose wise advice I have relied upon many a time. Link below so you all can meet her and learn about her work, too.

🚨 Exciting News!🚨 The Senator Elizabeth Dole 21st Century Veterans Healthcare and Benefits Improvement Act has officially been signed into law! 🎉 The Elizabeth Dole Foundation is deeply grateful for the unwavering support of our caregiver community, partners, and members of Congress in helping us achieve this milestone. After nearly two years of dedicated work alongside our coalition partners, we are proud to be on the path to a brighter future for veterans, caregivers, survivors, and their families. This landmark legislation will ensure that our veterans and their families receive the care and support they rightfully deserve. 🎉 Big news for veterans and their families! On Thursday, January 2, 2025, President Biden signed S. 141, the “Senator Elizabeth Dole 21st Century Veterans Healthcare and Benefits Improvement Act,” into law. This transformative legislation amends Department of Veterans Affairs authorities to enhance healthcare, expand economic opportunities, improve support for caregivers, address veteran homelessness, and much more. We extend our gratitude to Senators Moran, Tester, and Hassan, Representatives Ciscomani, Bost, Brownley, and Takano, and the many others whose leadership made this possible. The Dole Act is a significant step forward in ensuring veterans and their families receive the care and support they’ve earned. Together, we’re putting veterans’ needs first.

The 2024 PIT Count shows progress in reducing veteran homelessness, with a 7.5% decrease since 2023 and a 55.6% drop since 2010. This proves that with government leadership and community collaboration, homelessness is solvable. Yet, overall homelessness is rising, driven by skyrocketing rents, stagnant wages, and systemic inequities. The solutions that work for veterans can work for everyone—but we need bold action now. I'm so thankful I got to join Donald Whitehead and our partners at National Coalition for the Homeless at Homeless Persons Memorial Day on Saturday at Church of the Epiphany. For folks who don't yet know, this is a nationwide observance where communities gather to honor the memory of people who died while homeless, and to recommit toward working for actual solutions to homelessness. Over 120 people died outside in DC in 2024. Depending on configuration, that is the approximate equivalent of losing an entire Boeing 737 worth of passengers. Even more troubling is that many died as victims of crime or conditions correlated to local policy choices that disproportionately impact people in poverty (looking at affordable housing shortages, means testing, limited health care access, fining and ticketing as solutions to a housing crisis, etc.) I think the America I want to believe in can do better for folks, so I am challenging everyone who reads this to hold their communities accountable to creating a just future for everyone, whether they sleep inside or out. #EndHomelessness
