    Hurricane #HeleneNC was a once in a generation storm, devastating much of Western NC. Impacts to communities, businesses and infrastructure will be felt for a very long time. While it's no surprise Helene was the year's top story, our efforts to rebuild will continue as long as it takes. 🙏

    2024 started with the Cape Fear Memorial Bridge undergoing a preservation project - completed ahead of schedule in May. In July, a $242 million federal grant was announced, paving the way for a long-term investment in the future with a replacement bridge. All the buzz about the renowned bridge lands it at No. 3 on this year's top stories list.

    Our No. 4 social media story of the year is also a tip of the cap and a pat on the back to our crews on NC 12. Severe weather and overwash contributed to closures in February, March, September and November but crews persisted to keep the heart of the coastline beating.

    A new memorial in Wilson honors NCDOT employees who have paid the ultimate sacrifice while working to protect the traveling public. The memorial recognizes 12 individuals who have lost their lives in Highway Division 4, which covers Edgecombe, Halifax, Johnston, Nash, Wayne and Wilson counties dating back to 1975. We are forever grateful for their service and sacrifice.

    • Plaque in beloved memory of NCDOT Division 4 employees, featuring text that honors their service and commitment, with the emblem of the State of North Carolina, and a white ribbon symbol, set into a brick pavement.
    • A pathway lined with engraved bricks, each bearing the name of a fallen NCDOT employee.
    • Three flags flying on a flagpole surrounded by benches, with a memorial plaque at the base dedicated to NCDOT Division 4 Employees.
