Mario Kart: Double Dash took home the award for Outstanding Racing Game Sequel in 2003. The Gamecube racing game is an absolute classic and stand-out entry in the long-running Mario Kart franchise thanks to its unique co-op driving mechanics, the award was a split decision. With that said, the other nominees in that award category are perhaps equally deserving; nominees included F-Zero GX, Midnight Club 2, Need for Speed Underground, Project Gotham Racing 2, Splashdown: Rides Gone Wild – all of which are fantastic racing games. When it was released back in 2020, Animal Crossing: New Horizons was more than just a video game: it served as a form of escapism for millions of players who were isolated in a manner that they’d never before experienced. Animal Crossing could not have been released at a better time, and for that reason, it absolutely steamrolled its competition in the 2020 awards. When thinking about the best sports titles, Super Mario spin-offs aren’t always the first titles that pop into most players’ heads. But that’s exactly what happened in 2005, when Mario Superstar Baseball named the winner for NAVGTR’s Original Sports Game award. Though it may not have appeared so at the time, Mario Superstar Baseball is a mechanically deep game, with great gameplay, vast roster, and bursting with charm at the seams. The game practically came out of nowhere, and is easily considered a Dark Horse among both sports fans and Super Mario fans alike. 2003 was yet another year filled to the brim with amazing titles, with Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time only narrowly winning Game of the Year. While it may be great, the other GOTY nominees included The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, two games that now hold legendary status among gamers.
