When Hard Questions Lead to Real Change: A Fellow's Journey in Leadership I remember the moment I realized that effective leadership wasn't just about being in the room - it was about transforming it. As a National Urban Fellows (Class of 2012), my path from managing local preschool programs to shaping national workforce policy taught me that real change starts with seeing the whole system. Today, I see this same transformative vision in our recent graduate, Mynhan (Mayan) D.. Like many of us, she could have chosen a traditional path. Instead, she chose National Urban Fellows with a bold purpose: "I saw something that would challenge myself and think about racial equity and social justice in a very different way." During her fellowship at Project for Pride in Living (PPL), Mynhan turned this vision into action. She didn't just lead racial equity messaging initiatives – she reshaped conversations about inclusive workforce development. She didn't just participate in discussions – she facilitated crucial dialogues that pushed boundaries and opened minds. Her insight about leadership particularly resonates: "Effective leadership isn't just about being 'front and center' – it's about asking the hard questions that others can't or won't ask." As she explains, "There needs to be more people like us at the table... people who are pushing the buttons and asking the hard, hard questions, because not everyone there is able to push those questions." This is what makes National Urban Fellows unique. We don't just train leaders – we empower change-makers who understand that transformation requires both courage and compassion, both hard questions and humble listening. Will you join me in supporting the next generation of leaders like Mynhan? Your gift ensures that more fellows will receive: A transformative Georgetown education that reshapes how they think about leadership Mentorship that helps them translate bold questions into meaningful action Skills to build partnerships that create lasting systemic change ✨ Because when leaders like Mynhan emerge, our whole community grows stronger. As a climate justice grantmaker and a Board Member of National Urban Fellows (NUF), I'm compelled to share why supporting the next generation of social impact leaders is so critical. KaSelah Crockett, one of our current Fellows, represents exactly why this program matters. She has dedicated her life to building healing spaces – from innovative foster care programs to groundbreaking birth justice work. Like many Fellows, including myself years ago, she's at a pivotal moment: choosing to invest in her growth as a leader who can create systemic change. My own NUF journey transformed my career path from nonprofit development to strategic philanthropy. This program opens doors for passionate community servants to step into powerful leadership roles where they can impact entire sectors. "Taking this step means leaving our jobs, businesses, and regular income behind. Having support from donors means we can focus on our leadership journey. This peace of mind is essential for us to make the most of this transformative opportunity." - KaSelah Crockett, Class of 2025 In this season of giving, will you help provide that foundation? Your gift by December 31st will ensure Fellows like KaSelah can focus on their growth into the visionary leaders philanthropy and our communities desperately need. https://lnkd.in/egFqpWXs #SocialImpact #Leadership #Philanthropy #EquitableLeadership #NationalUrbanFellows

Every so often, someone’s story reminds me exactly why leadership development matters. As Co-Chair of the National Urban Fellows’ Alumni Advisory Board, I want to share one such story. Meet Robert Parsons, ("Tony"), whose journey from foster care advocate to public service leader embodies the transformative power of opportunity. Despite testifying before Congress and years of impactful work, he kept hearing: “You don’t have a master’s degree." His experience, his passion, his voice—none of it seemed to matter. Through National Urban Fellows (NUF), Tony earned not just a master’s degree, but a deeper understanding of leadership. Today, as Deputy Policy Director at Oakland Thrives, he helps shape initiatives to eliminate economic inequality and foster inclusive growth. He now serves as a NUF mentor, giving back and paying it forward. As we celebrate NUF's 55 years of developing diverse leaders, we’re racing to raise $55,000 to support the next generation of leaders and changemakers. There are more aspiring students like Tony out there—brilliant minds ready to transform their communities, if only given the chance. Will you join me in opening doors of opportunity for students who will be future leaders?
