  • NASA's Parker Solar Probe has set a new record for proximity to the sun, passing just 3.8 million miles above the solar surface on December 24, 2024. Traveling at a record-breaking speed of 430,000 miles per hour, the spacecraft safely completed its closest approach, sending confirmation that it was operating normally. This pass, the first of several to come, will enable unprecedented scientific measurements to enhance our understanding of the sun. The spacecraft uses a heat-resistant carbon foam shield to protect it from extreme temperatures in the sun's corona, which can exceed 1 million degrees Fahrenheit. Parker Solar Probe's proximity allows it to study crucial phenomena, including the solar wind, energetic particle acceleration, and the sun's corona temperature, revealing new insights into solar activity and its impact on the solar system. Since its 2018 launch, Parker Solar Probe has gradually approached the sun, using Venus flybys to adjust its orbit. It is now positioned in an ideal orbit to study the sun's processes every three months, remaining close enough for critical observations but far enough to avoid being overwhelmed by intense heat and radiation. The probe's findings, such as identifying the origin of solar wind structures and understanding coronal mass ejections, are transforming our knowledge of the sun. The next close solar passes are scheduled for March and June 2025. The data collected from this historic mission will significantly advance our understanding of the sun and its effects on technology, space weather, and star formation across the universe. #nstem #stem #science #technology #space #nasa #engineering #ParkerSolarProbe #SolarScience #SpaceExploration #Astrophysics #STEMeducation #SpaceTechnology #SunStudy #CosmicResearch

  • Researchers at the University of California, Riverside, have developed a method to eliminate toxic compounds from potatoes and tomatoes, making them safer to eat and easier to store. The breakthrough targets steroidal glycoalkaloids (SGAs), harmful chemicals produced by plants to protect against insects. These SGAs are found in the green parts of potatoes and can develop in the edible tubers after harvest, especially when exposed to sunlight. By identifying a key protein, GAME15, that regulates SGA production, scientists can potentially engineer plants to limit these toxins to non-edible parts. This innovation could reduce food waste, enhance crop production in extreme environments like space, and make potatoes safer for consumption and storage. #nstem #stem #science #technology #engineering #produce #FoodSafety #CropScience #PlantResearch #InnovativeAgriculture #SustainableFarming #UniversityResearch #ToxinElimination #AgriculturalInnovation #FoodWasteReduction #Biotechnology

  • The Steminist Ball is a vibrant and empowering event designed to celebrate the achievements of women and non-binary individuals in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) fields. It serves as both a recognition of their contributions and a platform to inspire future generations to pursue careers in these traditionally male-dominated areas. The ball, often held annually, is an elegant fusion of social celebration and academic empowerment, combining a formal evening of music, dancing, and networking with opportunities to learn about the latest developments in STEM. The event typically includes speeches from trailblazing women in STEM, panel discussions, and awards ceremonies that highlight the work and impact of underrepresented individuals in the sciences. It provides a supportive and inclusive environment where attendees can connect with mentors, share experiences, and discuss the challenges and triumphs of navigating STEM fields. Beyond just an opportunity to have fun and celebrate, the Steminist Ball aims to raise awareness about the gender disparities that still exist in STEM and advocate for more inclusive practices, better representation, and greater support for women, non-binary people, and other marginalized groups in these sectors. It's a gathering that encourages attendees to continue breaking barriers, fostering innovation, and contributing to a more diverse and equitable scientific community. Our very own Ken Hecht was present alongside Dr. Maxine Caine, the founder of STEM Atlanta Women. #nstem #stem #steministball
