Having your research published is an exciting and busy time! The proper acknowledgement of NIH funding is important for reasons beyond ensuring compliance with the award's terms. Stating that your research was funded, or funded in part, by NIH helps promote and track our role in scientific advances. Not all cell types in the brain age the same way. A new study based on NIH-Funded brain mapping research found that some cells may undergo more changes in genetic activity as a result of aging. Initial results showed that aging decreased genetic activity in neurons, astrocytes, and oligodendrocytes. In contrast, genetic activity increased in cells associated with the brain’s immunity and inflammatory systems. The cells that appear to be the most sensitive to aging surround the third ventricle, a major pipeline that enables cerebrospinal fluid to pass through the hypothalamus. A growing body of literature has reported a variety of sex differences that occur in multiple organs. These sex differences can influence female aging and impact women’s health beyond reproductive capacity. NIA’s Division of Aging Biology is hosting a hybrid workshop on March 20 & 21, 2025, focused on aging mechanisms impacting women’s health. Experts will discuss sex-specific aging, research gaps, and therapeutic opportunities. NIA-funded research found that long-term exposure to pollution, especially from traffic, may lead to the loss of independence in older adults. Using data from over 25,000 adults ages 50 and older, researchers studied pollution from road traffic, non-road traffic, and nitrogen dioxide. They estimated the total cost of individuals losing independence due to traffic-related air pollution exposure was $11.7 billion annually. In 2014, NIA-funded researchers began collecting data from responders who worked or volunteered in lower Manhattan, the Staten Island landfill, or barge-loading piers after the World Trade Center attacks. The researchers found that workers and volunteers exposed to dust, chemicals, and other pollutants have a higher risk of early-onset dementia than those who worked in low dust conditions or consistently used personal protective equipment.
