In this episode of the My Safety Tech Podcast, I had an insightful conversation with Allan Binns from Project Four Safety Solutions Ltd. One topic we explored was the rise in workplace fatalities in the construction sector, and to be honest, I may have had one too many cups of coffee because I was a bit fired up! To break it down, here’s the data on construction workplace fatalities in the UK from 2018 to 2024: 2018/19: 30 fatalities 2019/20: 40 fatalities 2020/21: 39 fatalities 2021/22: 30 fatalities 2022/23: 47 fatalities 2023/24: 51 fatalities These numbers indicate a troubling upward trend with some saying that what we're doing isn't working. But, as we examined these statistics, one major limitation stood out: the data doesn’t differentiate between large tier 1 construction companies and SMEs/local builders. During the lockdowns of 2020, for instance, tier one contractors were designated as “key workers” and allowed to continue large-scale projects, while many smaller builders took furlough or relied on self-employment assistance. The HSEs data does not differentiate between a tier 1 and a small builder. This is just one variable, yet it highlights a significant gap in how safety data is categorised by the HSE. Without breaking down these details, it's challenging to get a fully accurate picture of where the risks are highest. Ultimately, if we’re going to drive meaningful change, we need more transparency and granularity in safety statistics. Only then can we effectively protect everyone in the construction industry. I thoroughly enjoyed this conversation with the legendary Matt Jones 🙌 We discussed so much but here’s a few points: - the limitations of safety data and how this can be improved with tech - where professional registers for safety are getting it wrong and why I setup My Safety Consultant - what I’ve learned since hosting My Safety Tech Podcast - why AI is going to transform safety and how we can get involved You can tell I was up at 6 to get this recorded and you can spot the point where the coffee kicked in 😂
