About us
The Municipal Securities Rulemaking Board (MSRB) protects investors, state and local governments and other municipal entities, and the public interest by promoting a fair and efficient municipal securities market. The MSRB fulfills this mission by regulating the municipal securities firms, banks and municipal advisors that engage in municipal securities and advisory activities. To further protect market participants, the MSRB provides market transparency through its Electronic Municipal Market Access (EMMA®) website, the official repository for information on all municipal bonds. The MSRB also serves as an objective resource on the municipal market, conducts extensive education and outreach to market stakeholders, and provides market leadership on key issues. The MSRB is a Congressionally-chartered, self-regulatory organization governed by a board of directors that has a majority of public members, in addition to representatives of regulated entities. The MSRB is subject to oversight by the Securities and Exchange Commission.

Last week, tax-exempt benchmark yields rose significantly in response to higher yields in the Treasury market and a significant increase in bid-wanteds in the municipal securities market. The new issue calendar is expected to be quiet over the next few weeks, which could bolster the market since demand from individual investors remains robust. To see current and historic tax-exempt and Treasury yields, visit the Yield Curve section on EMMA. https://lnkd.in/gqYjtcfD

Yesterday, year-to-date trade count reached a new record surpassing the 13.1 million trades reported in 2023. Trade count has been bolstered by consistently high demand from investors as well as historically high new issue volume. This marks the third consecutive year for record trade count following a record low year in 2021. With 19 trading days left this month, trade count could exceed 14 million for the first time. To see current and historical trade count and par amount traded volumes visit the Overall Trade Patterns section under Market Statistics on EMMA. https://lnkd.in/eZEpAtsz

Although benchmark tax-exempt yields declined last week, they lagged the movement in Treasury bonds. This week, the new issue calendar is expected to increase significantly after the holiday-shortened week.
