📄 x2 📅 = 🤑 + 📆 = 😦 What's that you say? Raise your hand if your firm does a mid-month billing cycle in their final month of the year. On one hand, you are taking the opportunity to bill clients who are open to paying for additional time this year because they may have room in this year's budget. But don't forget, you're accelerating your cash cycle into the current year - robbing Peter to pay Paul. Balance current year performance with next years opportunities.

The co-chairs of Kramer Levin's White Collar practice have jumped ship (with several other partners) to Gibson Dunn. Kramer's 2023 PPEP = $2.4M Gibson's 2023 PPEP = $5.6M Revenue growth is not enough - firm's need to focus on profitability to ensure they can retain the best talent and provide competitive compensation for high producing partners. Is your firm's revenue growth healthy? Are you growing PPEP and RPL with revenue or is that eroding? The next time someone makes the argument that they should keep a long-time under performing attorney because they can cut their comp, remind them that overhead is expensive and that they are using dollars that could be more strategically deployed.

As technology rapidly evolves, professional services firms face increasing overhead costs that are difficult to offset through traditional hourly billing models. Many of the tools and platforms we invest in—critical for maintaining efficiency, compliance, and superior client service—are becoming more expensive. Yet, the cost of these technologies can't simply be passed on to clients as fee increases without risking competitive disadvantage. This is why it's time for our industry to rethink billing structures and consider non-hourly based fee arrangements. By moving towards value-based or fixed-fee models, firms can better align their services with the true value delivered rather than the time spent. This approach not only provides clients with more predictable billing but also allows firms to invest in necessary technology without being constrained by outdated pricing models. At Morvay Consulting Group, we specialize in helping firms navigate such transitions through our trademarked Executive Sponsorship services. By aligning strategic planning, project governance, and organizational change management, we ensure that your firm not only adapts to new pricing models but thrives within them. Let’s embrace this shift and unlock new avenues for growth and client satisfaction. #LegalInnovation #ChangeManagement #ProfessionalServices #ValueBasedBilling #TechnologyInvestment

Reflecting on the increasing technology costs - how are firms going to pass that along with billable hours? They can't. Clients assign billable hour value to the individual delivering the service. If overhead becomes too large a component, they will not see the value. Further, technology will make the practice more efficient reducing the number of hours firm's can bill for the same work. We are currently writing an article on this premise. Do you have a POV? We would love to hear from you and incorporate your views!

The creative thought shown here is a great example of firm's adapting to what technology offers versus forcing it to adapt to you. Only when firm's change "Business as Usual" to a new model that incorporates technology as an asset will we see the ROI needed for today's large technology investments.

Want to reduce your firm's fee delinquency by 75%? Shorten your billing cycle. We used to bill monthly at Hemmat Law Group. Why? Because: 1) That’s how we always did it; 2) Monthly was the industry standard; 3) It was convenient and required less administrative effort. Then we realized that increasing our billing cadence offered several benefits. 💰 We could catch delinquencies faster. 💵 Our outstanding balances could get smaller. 👀 Clients would have a better understanding of what they were paying. So we decided to try billing our clients twice a month. In the first month, our fee delinquency dropped by 50%. The rate has only decreased more since then. So now, our firm makes more money, and we sleep better at night. Win win, right? This is just one example of how questioning the status quo leads to better law firms. "That's how we've always done it" is just not a great reason to keep doing the same. Is it?
