    🚨 Breaking Retail News 🚨 After a three-week trial, a federal judge in Oregon has issued a temporary injunction blocking Kroger’s $24.6 billion acquisition of Albertsons. The decision aligns with the Biden administration’s antitrust stance, arguing that the merger could stifle competition and lead to higher prices for consumers. Combined, Kroger and Albertsons would have controlled approximately 11% of the U.S. grocery market—half the size of Walmart. The court sided with the FTC’s view that Kroger’s dominance, even with the planned divestiture of 579 stores to C&S Wholesale Grocers, would undermine fair competition. Kroger aimed to lower prices in Albertsons stores, which are typically 10–12% higher than Kroger’s. However, this decision underscores the importance of preserving competition—not only to protect consumers but also to support smaller retail businesses and prevent market monopolization. As these two grocers navigate their next steps, they may need to shift focus to internal efficiencies, store profitability, or even closures of underperforming locations. How many years was that??! - Kudos to Clay Heinzel-Nelson for getting the deal done! - Also Rachelle Lynch + Jessica Boroi for your vote of confidence and experience using Modus for years! This spoke volume! - Last but not least, Jill Banko is a mastermind when it comes to onboarding and keeping up with my many many.. many..... questions. Nothing was broken at Fishwife or required us to jump quickly to a TPM tool but this is why it was the perfect time to implement it so we are able to be smarter and make better decisions.
