The size of the market alone doesn’t matter if you’re not solving specific problems for specific people. It is one of the first things I learned leading Miden (YC W24). Here are a few principles I’ve learned that have guided our growth and kept us focused: ✅ 1. Focus Beats Frenzy A big market is only valuable if you can carve out a meaningful niche. Who is underserved? What’s their most pressing pain point? The clearer your focus, the sharper your execution. ✅ 2. Depth Before Width Trying to solve every problem for everyone is a surefire way to burn resources. Instead, go deep. Master one customer segment, solve their most critical problem, and use that momentum to expand. Early wins build the trust and credibility you need for larger growth. ✅ 3. Iterate Like Your Life Depends on It Every product launch or feature release should be treated as an experiment. What are you learning? What’s failing? The insights from these iterations are worth more than the revenue they generate at first. ✅ 4. Uncover the Invisible Barriers In developing markets, what isn’t being said is often more important than what is. Customers may not explicitly tell you that accessibility or mistrust is the issue—but their behavior will. It’s your job to read between the lines and build solutions that address these hidden obstacles. ✅ 5. Solve Problems That Scale Scaling is beyond adding more features but more of solving problems that naturally grow as your customers grow. If the foundation is strong, scale becomes a natural extension of what you’ve already built. Big markets are ecosystems, not targets. They shift, they evolve, and they challenge you to keep learning. If you’re not adapting, you’re losing. At the end of the day, it’s not just the size of the market that matters, it’s how well you understand and serve it.

Yesterday was Universal Children’s Day, and more than ever, we’re reminded that every child deserves a chance to dream, regardless of their circumstances. Through our joint partnership, we are creating pathways for underserved children like Christopher, Vivian, Success, and more children to achieve their dreams. At Miden and Chess in Slums Africa we stand committed to UN Sustainable Development Goal 4: Quality Education.
