  • At MeetMeals, we are dedicated to forging deep connections between individuals through the universal language of food. Our chefs, hailing from diverse cultural backgrounds, infuse each dish with their unique stories and heritage. Recognizing these dishes and flavors as invaluable social capital, MeetMeals has positioned itself as an innovative social enterprise. Our mission is to leverage this capital to foster community building, facilitate meaningful dialogue, and promote cultural diversity. These values guided us to participate in the Dutch New Narrative Lab x Social Enterprise NL Launchpad Demo Day 2024, held at Amazon NL. This event marked the culmination of a remarkable journey, where over the past 12 weeks, DNNL created a supportive growth environment for a select cohort of entrepreneurs with migration backgrounds. • How Buying Homemade Food from Local Chefs Helps the Local Economy? Purchasing homemade food from local chefs offers substantial benefits to the Dutch local economy through various channels: 💼 Economic Impact: Supporting local chefs increases their income, enabling them to spend more within the community. In the Netherlands, such local spending stimulates various local businesses and services. According to a study by MKB-Nederland, every euro spent at a local small business generates about 2.5 times more wealth for the local economy compared to spending at a large chain store. 👩🍳 Job Creation: Local food businesses often hire locally, creating jobs and reducing unemployment. Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), including those in the food sector, make up 99% of all businesses in the Netherlands. The Dutch Chamber of Commerce (KvK) highlights that SMEs are crucial for job creation and employ around 70% of the workforce. 🌾 Local Ingredients: Chefs in the Netherlands frequently source their ingredients from nearby farms and suppliers, supporting local agriculture and related industries. For instance, the Dutch locality “boeren” (farmers) markets are thriving, benefiting from the increased demand for locally produced food. The Rabobank analysis shows that every euro spent on local food can yield significant returns, as much as 1.8 euros, to the local economy. 🏘️ Community Cohesion: Engaging with local chefs fosters a sense of community and keeps cultural traditions alive. It also strengthens communal bonds. Research by Wageningen University indicates that local food initiatives can enhance social well-being and community resilience. --- Sources: MKB-Nederland, “Economic Impact of Local Businesses in the Netherlands” Dutch Chamber of Commerce (KvK), “Role of SMEs in the Dutch Economy” Rabobank, “The Economic Contributions of Local Food Markets” Wageningen University, “Community Well-being and Local Food Systems”

  • Dutch still life paintings that featured food were far more than simple depictions of abundance. They were rich in symbolism, reflecting themes of mortality, morality, wealth, and national pride. Through their detailed and realistic portrayals, these paintings conveyed complex messages about the human condition and the transient nature of life, making them a significant and thought-provoking genre in the history of art. Join us as Meetmeals offers a fresh perspective on the world of food.
