A heartwarming mission in Rochester, Minnesota — Around 20 active-duty soldiers visited 5-year-old Gabe Downey at Mayo Clinic Children's Center. Gabe, who is battling rhabdomyosarcoma, has been receiving incredible support from soldiers worldwide after his mom shared his journey on social media. Santa and Mrs. Claus helped spread some holiday cheer at Mayo Clinic Children's Center this week with a special delivery of 670 colorful balloons from Hy-Vee. For much of history, researchers have treated diseases by targeting the proteins involved, such as giving insulin for diabetes or statins for heart disease. Over the last couple of decades, however, they have pursued gene therapies that target disease at the level of the DNA, including developing drugs that correct the genetic defect in sickle-cell disease. In his 5 years, Arthur has lived much of his life in the hospital because of terminal cancer. That's where he met Kevin Pike, a security ambassador at Mayo Clinic, who ignited a passion for Pokémon in Arthur. So much so that Arthur, with Kevin's help and that of the Make-A-Wish Foundation, went on to throw a party for friends at the Mayo Clinic Children's Center. ⁠ ⁠ As is often the case with those affected by cancer, people focus on how sad and unfair it is. Arthur's mom, Freya, wants to help change that.⁠ ⁠ "I want to focus on how much fun we're having and the people we've met," she says. "Mayo Clinic Children’s Center has helped us buy this time we're using to make memories."⁠

On Dec. 18, 2023, the world went silent for Thomas Campbell. The active and vibrant 70-year-old lost his hearing in his left ear when he was 33 years old. And without much warning, on that December day, his hearing went out in his right ear, leaving him completely unable to hear.
