Helping women succeed in public service by enhancing career-building models that develop leadership skills and by networking professional women in government in Massachusetts. The Massachusetts Municipal Management Association established the Women Leading Government Committee as a formal committee in 2018. Its mission is to educate, mentor, encourage and support women in the local government profession. While its focus is to provide resources and support for women in municipal government or those interested in a career in local government, all are welcome and encouraged to participate.

Early on in my career, I was told there was I was "too emotional." Despite that, I became the only female CEO among the top 25 in the market research industry. Later, I founded The Female Quotient to challenge outdated workplace norms and create a future where everyone can thrive. The stereotype that women are “too emotional” to lead effectively—especially in uncertain times—is not just outdated; it’s simply wrong. Research from 137 leader-report pairs in Europe during the COVID-19 pandemic found that while women experienced higher levels of anxiety, they were far less likely than men to let it negatively impact their leadership. The study highlights women’s unique strengths in leadership. Anxious male leaders were more prone to hostile behaviors, while women consistently led with compassion and prioritized family-supportive actions. Sometimes we feel we have to be one way or another... this is a reminder to not make the quiet versus loud mistake!!!
A powerful reminder: leadership isn’t defined by volume, and contribution isn’t measured by how loudly someone speaks. The quietest person in the room may be a deep thinker, refining their ideas before sharing them. They might be an exceptional listener, absorbing perspectives to provide thoughtful insights. We should never mistake silence for passivity or equate loudness with authority. True value comes from substance. Let’s challenge assumptions and recognize that strength comes in many forms—because quality will always outweigh quantity.

Women Leading Government held the largest event in its 10 year history today. Today's meeting at Lake Pearl in Wrentham brought together women from every area in local government. Jaime Kenny and Jean Haertl offered a timely program on de-escalation techniques. Millis Assistant Town Administrator Karen Bouret Demarzo and Franklin Town Administrator Jamie Hellen led a podcast discussion on burnout. Thanks to everyone who attended today!
