"Feeling stuck? Get out of the room. Give it time. And never give up!" As designers and innovators, we often feel the pressure to keep pushing, to force the next breakthrough. But the most impactful ideas don’t always emerge when we’re cramming in hours at the desk or glued to the screen. Sometimes, they emerge when we step away and give our minds the space to breathe. Shaking things up doesn't mean bulldozing through the block — it means giving yourself the freedom to move in new directions, even if that means taking a break or completely switching gears for a bit, changing your environment and taking a walk! Remember: the magic of creativity happens in the in-between moments. So don’t be afraid to take a step back and let your ideas marinate. Keep going, but don’t forget to give yourself permission to rest. That’s where the real breakthroughs are made. Let's hear your personal creative tricks for getting unstuck! Bisi

I have an incredible story, straight from 30,000 feet in the air! ✈ In August of 2023, I was invited to connect with Walter Kemp. Walter reached out to me after being on a flight that was screening the “MAU” documentary. And he shared that the film came to him at just the right time: Walter and his team were grappling with how to increase societal awareness of a massive global challenge: transnational organized crime. As the Director of Communications at Global Initiative against Transnational Organized Crime (GI-TOC), it was Walter’s responsibility to lead the narrative approach which would frame GI-TOC’s Global Strategy Report. But there were so many elements to the story — myriad actors and interests — that it was difficult to convey the full context and get to clarity. Walter shared that "MAU" (and my MC24® Design Principles) had inspired him with a new way of approaching their communications. He was thinking like a designer! Applying a design-mindset to his organization’s approach, Walter and his team began looking at their issue systemically. GI-TOC partnered with Café.art.br, a Brazil-based design studio, to conceptualize the whole ecosystem. Sketching, visualizing and mapping organizational data into bold graphics, they designed to make the invisible visible. Their resulting narrative and report,  “Intersections: Building Blocks of a Global Strategy Against Organized Crime,” is a truly impressive and  informative work, with infographics, maps and images which offer a newfound salience and insights. I highly recommend exploring and downloading the report! It’s essential reading for anyone who wants to understand and address the critical challenges of global organized crime. (And for those unfamiliar with the issue, you may be surprised just how interconnected the transnational crime is to your work and all aspects of global well-being.) Explore and download the report via the link below! https://bit.ly/4fUL3cV I’m thrilled to see the “MAU” documentary and the MC24 Design Principles contributing to such impactful work. And I’m eager to witness the positive change and heightened awareness that I hope this report will bring. I’m curious what YOU think about the report and how it applies to YOUR work! I'm thrilled to invite you to an extraordinary exhibition now on display in Glendale, California: "Blended Worlds", running through January 4, 2025. This thought-provoking multimedia exhibit brings together art, science and imagination to explore the landscape of human relationships with our ever-expanding environment. Eleven artists are featured, and I'm honored to be among them! The work pictured here, “Memory, Reason, and Imagination,” is one of six thought-provoking globes featured in LOVE LETTERS TO THE XO PLANETS, a collaboration between myself, NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory and fabricators Adam Lowe and FACTUM ARTE. The globe's design synthesizes Diderot’s map of knowledge (from the mid-18th century) with new knowledge. Throughout history, humanity has sought to classify the totality of knowledge. Each era’s attempt reflects shifting perspectives about how we understand and relate to the world. Today’s networked models allow us to see new connections and inspire innovative thinking across intellectual domains. Whether you’re an artist, scientist, designer, or dreamer, this exhibit is not to be missed. Make time to visit and immerse yourself in this unique blend of art and exploration. 📍 Location: Brand Library & Art Center, Glendale, CA 📅 Exhibit Dates: Now through January 4, 2025 https://lnkd.in/gGkupzFS Let me know if you make it out — I’d love to hear your thoughts! This is a call for life-centered collaboration! Last week, I had the privilege of presenting within The Design School at ASU to frame our unprecedented opportunity to bring life-centered design across all disciplines — 16 schools and colleges — at Arizona State University. Caring for the citizen, community and ecology, the principles of life-centered design provide a completely new way of thinking and doing, towards a healthier, more resilient future for all living things — not just humans. WE WANT YOU TO BE A PART OF THIS. Celebrating 70 years of design education within The Design School, and delivering on the design imperatives of The New American University, we will design — within community, for community — putting life at the center. I have immense gratitude to Senior Vice Provost and Dean of ASU Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts, Renee Cheng, for her visionary leadership; I very much look forward to our collaboration in 2025 and beyond. I want to extend special thanks to paola sanguinetti, Director of The Design School, for the gracious invitation to be a part of the celebration, with Aiyemobisi "Bisi" Williams. I'm also deeply appreciative of the brilliant panelists — Patricia Moore, Sonja Bochart, John meunier, and Krista Shepherd, AIA, NCARB, LEED AP — who added invaluable insights to our robust conversation. And to ASU's leaders, thinkers and future designers with whom I have not yet connected, I look forward to discovering how life-centered design can be in service to your research and practice! • "And then someone pulled out the book 'MASSIVE CHANGE' by Bruce Mau..." So begins the "99% Invisible" podcast episode in which host Roman Mars recounts the story behind naming his project, "99% Invisible." Mars shares that the title was inspired by Bruce Mau's insight, inside the cover of "MASSIVE CHANGE": "For most of us, design is invisible. Until it fails." Today, October 25th, is Bruce's birthday! We celebrate not only Bruce’s journey but also the countless creative projects — 99% invisible — that he has inspired with his ideas, books, art, bold fonts, sketched squiggles and infectious laugh! In that same "MASSIVE CHANGE" introduction, Bruce draws upon one of his greatest sources of inspiration, R. Buckminster Fuller, dedicating an entire paragraph to quoting "Inventory of World Resources Human Trends and Needs" (1963) in which Fuller writes: "There are very few men today who are disciplined to comprehend the totally integrating significance of the 99 percent invisible activity which is coalescing to reshape our future." From Fuller, to Bruce, to storytellers like Roman Mars — a lineage of designers and big thinkers continues to flourish and inspire. Happy Birthday, Bruce! And Happy Inspiration to All! — Catch the 99% Invisible episode here: "Brilliantly Boring" https://lnkd.in/gjw87HuB And special thanks to friend of MCN, Nick Puglisi for sharing the story with us! • We recently had the pleasure of sharing our foundational MC24® Design Principles with an absolutely inspiring group of design students from the Design Students' Association (DSA) at York University. The students got an up-close look at our work, design leadership approach and ongoing projects, facilitated by Managing Director Gretchen Gscheidle, MPD2 and Junior Designer, Siann B. (posing here, to be sketched!). Thank you Design Students' Association (DSA) for bringing your infectious energy, enthusiasm and open minds to our Studio, and the very best of luck in your professional design endeavors! #mcn #massivechangenetwork #design #lifecentereddesign #yorkuniversity #sketch

  • What if life-centered design became the global norm? How can a life-centered design ethics catalyze massive change for our world, both inside and outside protected areas?

One of six provocative globes featured in "A Love Letter to the XO Planets," the globe shown here — "Islands of Intelligence in a Sea of Indifference" —examines regions of our planet preserved for the future. While nature parks serve as symbols of conservation, they are not the solution — they highlight our broader problem. We protect areas of natural beauty while neglecting other vital ecosystems, often less picturesque but equally essential. Within park borders, we strive for environmental stewardship, leaving no trace. Yet beyond these boundaries, we perpetuate waste and environmental harm. What if we reversed this approach? By expanding responsible environmental practices to vast areas and restricting unsustainable behaviors to isolated zones, we could foster global accountability. Could we, as the late E.O. Wilson proposed, guide all forms of life through this critical 50-year "bottleneck" by making environmental stewardship the global standard? This work is a collaboration between myself, NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), and fabricator Adam Lowe and FACTUM ARTE, as part of the Blended Worlds exhibition, on display at the Brand Library & Art Center (City of Glendale, CA) through January 4, 2025. Plan your visit today! Best, Bruce #blendedworlds #brucemau #jpl #factumarte #design #designers

What an extraordinary experience screening the MAU documentary with Aiyemobisi "Bisi" Williams at the stunning Grace Farms Foundation in New Canaan, CT, as part of the Architecture & Design Film Festival (ADFF). A huge thank you to Grace Farms' Architecture Advisor, Toshihiro Oki, and Director of ADFF, Kyle Bergman for facilitating such a meaningful community engagement at this remarkable space, this past weekend! Grace Farms is where nature, arts, justice, and community come together in harmony, housed in the breathtaking SANNA-designed River Building and farms. Their Design for Freedom initiative is leading the charge to eliminate forced labor in the building materials supply chain — a true example of life-centered design in action. Thank you to the entire Grace Farms team for supporting the screening. We hope keep the design conversation going! • “How did 'MASSIVE CHANGE' inspire you?” — Today marks the 20th anniversary of the groundbreaking exhibition which reframed the power of design to address the world’s most vexing problems and realize a better future. Inspiring a generation of designers with a new global ambition, “MASSIVE CHANGE” began with an invitation to create an exhibit about the future of design for the Vancouver Art Gallery (VAG) and led to the co-founding of the Institute without Boundaries (IwB), an experiential education program, in collaboration with Toronto’s George Brown College. Graduate students worked in our studio to research and develop the “MASSIVE CHANGE” exhibition, product line, website, radio show and book, “MASSIVE CHANGE,” published by Phaidon. By any standard, “MASSIVE CHANGE” was wildly successful. Opening at VAG on October 2nd 2004 and moving on to Art Gallery of Ontario and Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, the show broke museum attendance records (beating Warhol and Picasso!). The project was also the design platform upon which Massive Change Network (MCN) was later founded in 2010. As we celebrate this milestone, this October we are reflecting the history of the project's inception and design, as well as the myriad collaborators and contributors who came together to realize it. We are also inviting YOU to join the conversation and share your insights and reflections on its legacy: 🟥 What does “MASSIVE CHANGE” mean to you today? 🟥 How did "MASSIVE CHANGE" inspire you? 🟥 Did the exhibition and/or book transform your world or thinking? How? We’d love to hear from you! Images: 1. In 2004, Massive Change premiered at the VAG with a 20,000 square foot exhibition. The same year, Phaidon published the "MASSIVE CHANGE" book, co-authored by Bruce Mau, IwB students and Jennifer Leonard. 2. Over two years, 14 students at the IwB researched, wrote, and designed the "MASSIVE CHANGE" exhibition, website, radio show and book, with Bruce Mau and associates. 3.
