It's evident that #policy decisions affect women's health in all sorts of ways, and one way that is most evident is through funding for women's health research. Lack of such research leaves gaps in medical knowledge and less opportunities to inform innovation that can help improve women's health. In recent months, collective advocacy influenced the launch of significant women's health initiatives, including a proposed $12 billion to improve #womenshealth through research, services and #innovation and a $100 million #healthresearch program, announced by the White House. Highlights of Letter to Congress Advocating for Women's Health Research Funding -Add $500 million to the NIH Common Fund within the Labor, Health and Human Services and Education Appropriations bill focused on women’s health research and innovation for FY2023 -Double the funding for the NIH Office of Research on Women’s Health from FY24 budget of $76.48 million to $153.9 million within the Labor, Health and Human Services and Education Appropriations bill -Establish a $10 million FDA Center of Excellence on Women’s Health Innovation within the Agriculture, Rural Development, Food and Drug Administration and Related Agencies Appropriations bill that ensures clinical trial design is representative of disease impact in the broader population, and includes a fast track process in women’s health -Create $50 million Women’s Health Research Program within the DoD Congressionally Directed Medical Research Program within the Defense Appropriations bill and require an annual report to Congress of the amount and percentage of funding for women’s health research within the agency -Include $13.7 billion for women Veterans’ healthcare, including $1.1 billion toward women’s gender-specific care within the Military Construction and Veterans Affairs Appropriations bill -Establish a $10 million NSF Women’s Health Innovation Program within the Commerce, Justice and Science Appropriations bill dedicated to computer science, artificial intelligence (AI), and/or engineering to support research and development within digital technologies to advance the health of women in recognition of the historical exclusion of women limiting accuracy of data used in AI to ensure bias that can be harmful is eliminated   Co-sign the letter here https://lnkd.in/gc7_Nc75

A new McKinsey & Company report Closing the women’s health gap: A $1 trillion opportunity to improve lives and economies was shared at the World Economic Forum in Davos. When adjusting for actual disease burden, menopause was cited among the top 2 conditions with a GDP impact of a whopping ~$120B. The report also highlighted that improving women’s health not only improves women’s quality of life but also enables them to participate more actively in the workforce and make a living. The potential value created through women’s higher economic participation and productivity exceeds the costs of implementation by a ratio of $3 to $1 globally. The authors outlined an opportunity to close the women’s health gap by (1) investing in women-centric R&D, (2) strengthening the collection and analysis of sex- and gender-disaggregated data, (3) enhancing access to gender-specific care, (4) encouraging investments in women’s health innovation, and (5) examining business policies to support women. Excellent article from Janet Siroto in Cosmo (Hearst Magazines). Yes! This is a massive market with major spending power. And, fundamentally, women deserve (and are demanding!) better. "Adults 55 and older control nearly two-thirds of household wealth in this country, although only about 5 percent to 10 percent of marketing budgets vie for the over-50 demographic....Why is so little cash still being thrown at sexual-health solutions needed by so many women (and those who control such a hunk of wealth)?"
