Ask your team if they love shipping out laptops to remote workers. I’m willing to bet you get responses that rank somewhere between “ugh” and “NO!” - IT hates it. They must spend time acquiring and configuring the proper machine. - Admins dread it. Have you ever tried figuring out VAT and customs forms? Not a fun way to spend an afternoon. - Security fears it. Once that machine leaves the safety of your HQ, they’ve lost control of it. Managers are hesitant. Will the machine arrive on time? Or will we be wasting half the contract waiting for the package to arrive? With so many team members aligned against it, why are so many organizations still shipping out expensive Mac laptops? - Some team members require Mac for their workflows - Macs, especially powerful ones, aren’t readily available in all areas of the world - Because they are not widely used, Macs are often treated as one-off - There are no great Mac VDI options (Spoiler Alert: this has recently changed) We did the math on shipping and VAT expenses, specifically. Let’s break it down. What does it really cost to ship a MacBook Pro? You’ve got the based cost of the machine. That will range based on the specs, but let’s pencil in a modest $1,600 for this exercise. - Shipping to Ireland: $87.80 for priority shipping (3-4 days) + $368 VAT = $455.80 - Shipping to South Africa: $136.60 for priority shipping (3-4 days) + $240 VAT = $376.60 - Shipping to Columbia: $158.58 for priority shipping (3-4 days) + $304 VAT = $462.58 There are other places around the world you may also want to ship to, but you can see that it’s reasonable to expect at least $400 in shipping costs. (Not accounting for your team’s time to do this, of course.) Oh yeah, and double all those if you plan to have the team member send the machine back to you when they are finished with it. Instead of throwing away $2k (~$1,600 machine + ~$400 shipping costs), why not get a cloud-hosted Mac to power a Citrix VDI?
