About us
The Literacy Center of West Michigan is committed to bringing about a just and vibrant West Michigan through the power of literacy. With this mission statement, we are shining a light on the crucial role literacy levels play in shaping our community's future. The Literacy Center works with adults, both native speakers of English and English language learners, who read below a 9th grade level and want to improve their literacy. We are at the forefront of adult literacy instruction. Our programs meet learners where they are, offering one-on-one tutoring, workplace-focused classes, and family literacy opportunities at no cost to the learners. The Literacy Center instructs 800+ adults each year, utilizing 300 volunteers, and yet the need greatly exceeds our capacity. With 55,000 adults in Kent County held back by low literacy skills, the Literacy Center is eager to expand its capacity and draw attention to the crucial issue of low literacy among adults in our community.

We are beyond grateful to TowerPinkster for their incredible generosity this holiday season! 🎉 Their Grand Rapids team raised over $10,000 through their annual holiday giving challenge to support the Literacy Center of West Michigan. This gift will directly support our community and citizenship classes, helping learners improve their English skills to prepare for the U.S. citizenship interview and exam. These classes, provided free of charge, empower our learners to #achieve their dreams of becoming U.S. citizens, fostering greater opportunities and connections within our community. Thank you, TowerPinkster, for choosing to #invest in literacy and for making a lasting impact on so many lives. Together, we’re building a stronger, more inclusive Grand Rapids! #Gratitude #HolidayGiving #LiteracyChangesLives #TowerPinkster

In three days, we turn the Known Profit spotlight on the Literacy Center of West Michigan. I had so many misconceptions about this organization until we got the chance to sit down with Wendy, hear her story, and learn more about the mission of the center. One (of many) of my favorite parts during our conversation was about the importance of immigration in the workforce and the labor market. For a topic that often seems tension-filled, Wendy talks about it beautifully: "These folks are of value add to our community on multiple levels, including economic levels. It's very easy to make the case for what we do." Come learn more with us this Monday. Drew Meyers | Jonathan (JR) Roberts #podcast #KnownProfits #community #nonprofit

🌟 Building Community Through Family Literacy 🌟 At the Literacy Center of West Michigan, we are proud to partner with Grand Rapids Public Schools to support parents learning English directly at their children’s elementary schools. Workshops like these—focused on the importance of parent involvement in education—are vital to helping families gain tools and confidence in English literacy to support their scholars' success. We were thrilled to see some of our English learners join the workshop as part of their on-site classes, a true reflection of the power of #FamilyLiteracy and #CommunityBuilding in action. 📣 Check out Southwest Middle-Highschool's Facebook post for more highlights from this amazing event: https://lnkd.in/ghHY8Pr8 Together, we are fostering connections that benefit families and build a stronger community! #AdultEducation #ParentEngagement #MultiGenerationalLearning #StrongerTogether
