Check out Pete's article for Licensing Executives Society International (LESI)'s March 2024 issue of les Nouvelles!
Equipping OVERCOMERS with brand strategy, brand expansion and brand licensing tools. Consulting | Coaching | Workshops to enable them to compete with the big guys.
I recently wrote a blog post on my website that discusses my admiration for an organization I’m a part of – Licensing Executives Society International (LESI) – as it not only aligns with my expertise, but adds to it, thanks to the diverse group of professionals who make up the membership. I believe we can always learn from others, and since most of our fields are vast and made up of countless micro specialties, I love how I can benefit from the intellectual property attorneys who share their expertise. I was happy to repay in kind by sharing my expertise regarding the intersection of licensing and branding in the March 2024 issue of LESI’s journal, les Nouvelles. If you’re interested in reading a bit about what I wrote, I’ve included an excerpt of my article in my blog post (https://lnkd.in/ec5bUeRC) or you can read the full article (https://lnkd.in/eFEDhSst)! #publication #licensing #branding #expertise

We're celebrating 15 years of BrandAlive!
Equipping OVERCOMERS with brand strategy, brand expansion and brand licensing tools. Consulting | Coaching | Workshops to enable them to compete with the big guys.
Happy 15th anniversary to me! This month, I’m celebrating myself, my awesome team, my amazing clients and my steadfast collaborator partners because I wouldn’t be where I am without any of them! I am proud of myself, especially after some of the challenges I encountered in my work life before I decided to launch my own business (like when I was laid off from Coca-Cola 👉 https://lnkd.in/egdrwxZV). But I write this post not to throw confetti on myself. I want to throw it at ALL entrepreneurs, at all stages of growth. I’m celebrating you if: 🎉 You’re feeling stuck because you’re trying to build something, but don’t know how to do it. 🎉 You’re feeling overwhelmed because you’re alone, and this is hard. Finances are hard. Time management is hard. 🎉 This is a side hustle, and you’re working a full-time job and you’re exhausted from putting every last bit of energy you have into this dream of yours. 🎉 You don’t know how to get noticed, or get clients. 🎉 You’ve been doing this awhile, and you just need some sleep. 🎉 You’re excited about doing work you believe in, but the grind has made you stop believing and you want to get it back… 🎉 You just launched your first product. 🎉 You sold your first book. 🎉 You booked your first client. 🎉 You don’t have anyone throwing confetti at you. I’ve been there, too. All those places. The lowest lows and the highest highs. The mediocre in-betweens. Big growth, stagnation, decline, reinvention…I get it. Entrepreneurship is HARD. There’s no way to sugar coat it. At times you might feel like you’re the only one in the world who believes in what you’re doing, or who even knows you’re doing it. But I’m here to tell you this: Keep Going. Just put one foot in front of the other. Keep building. Keep growing. Keep trying. Keep dreaming. Because you may find yourself looking at the calendar, 15 years from now, after you launched a dream that required you to believe in yourself, only to realize that it was all worth it. #dreamscometrue #success #hardwork #entrepreneur #patience #dontgiveup

You can never be sure what the road looks like 5 miles ahead, even if you’ve driven it a million times before. Until you’re in that car, you will have no idea if it’s straight the whole way, or full of winding turns and gnarly switchbacks. There could be a gaping pothole or a deer crossing in front of you when you least expect it. Or, perhaps, it will be a totally peaceful ride with zero obstacles. At the start of 2020, I had many speaking engagements booked all across the country. I was excited to be doing what I love - sharing what I know about how to build a successful brand. Then the pandemic hit and in an instant, all of them got canceled. My work dried up, as many clients could not afford my services or their businesses sadly perished. I felt I was driving in a plume of fog, until I realized that there is still opportunity in uncertainty. For that year and the one that followed, the whole world shared a similar experience. None of us knew what to expect. Though we were all in the same car, so to speak, everyone’s individual journeys looked completely different. I recollected back to 2002 when I had lost my job with Coca-Cola and had time on my hands. A friend encouraged me to volunteer and pour into others who needed help. Two to three nights a week over the next three months, I served on a crisis line until I landed a job. That experience changed my life. I continue to support that organization today. So, how could I use this period of uncertainty and stillness to make a difference? Every two weeks from April-August of 2020, I taught those who were interested about brands using my LASSO Model (https://lnkd.in/ejBFyxz). Through a series of webinars (https://lnkd.in/eVaqbZhY), I tackled the following questions: How do brands expand? What makes them addictive? Why do their stories matter? How do they scale? And finally, what makes people feel like they own them? As I went through the webinars on Zoom, I saw so many faces feeling stuck like me. What if my Model could be applied to their personal brands? Could I help them get unstuck? This lateral thinking led me to create a new methodology on how to build a brand – focusing on brand story, brand architecture and brand positioning. I realized that when I shifted the focus away from me to others, especially in times of uncertainty, something unique and special could come from it. A lot of positive things happened when I began looking at the growth that can happen from change. How about you? What experiences in your life forced you to reevaluate or try things you may not have tried otherwise? How did you grow as a person and as a professional? #challenge #growth #change #dontgiveup #business #innovation #shiftthefocus

Pete will be attending Carolina Veterans Alumni Network's Women in Government Leadership Panel on March 7th. Will you be there? ⬇️
Equipping OVERCOMERS with brand strategy, brand expansion and brand licensing tools. Consulting | Coaching | Workshops to enable them to compete with the big guys.
I’m thrilled to be attending this Carolina Veterans Alumni Network event, featuring influential women leaders from a wide range of government sectors who will be discussing their experiences, obstacles, and insights. As many of you know, my daughter, Ellie is a recent graduate of the United States Naval Academy, my alma mater, and I’m always getting insight from her about her experience as a woman in the military. I want to keep learning, and keep championing women at the helm who are doing some amazing things to advance the work of those in service, as well as veterans like me. I’m also super excited to “meet” Leyla Santiago, Former CNN Correspondent, who will be moderating a panel of esteemed women, including: • The Honorable Tanya Bradsher, Veterans Affairs Deputy Secretary • Vice Provost Barbara Stephenson, Former Ambassador; VP of Global Affairs & Chief Global Officer at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill • Diplomat in Residence Stephanie Hutchison, U.S. Department of State Recruiter for Prospects in the Mid-Atlantic region • Supervisory Special Agent Star Hy, U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Diplomatic Security • Lieutenant Colonel Rachel Cepis, Director of US Army Special Operations Command, Women in ARSOF Initiative • Chief Warrant Officer 5 Yolondria Dixon-Carter, Assistant Executive Officer & Senior Warrant Officer Advisor to the US Army Chief of Staff Will you be on the webinar or there in person? ➡️ https://lnkd.in/eyNrG9pW #veterans #womeninleadership #leadership

Have you ever wished you could write a letter to your younger self and help guide her instead of waiting for her to stumble and fall? While I know that this might not be a great idea because it is the mistakes that often teach us the biggest lessons, help us become stronger and wiser – and maybe even more successful – I admit to thinking about going back in time like Michael J. Fox in Back to the Future, to try and reconfigure a few things. If I did, here are some of the things I’d tell my younger self: 1. Build in time for rest and recovery. Going too hard or too long makes you ineffective and cranky. 2. Give credit to others. Be considerate of their feelings. Their reward is your reward. 3. Winning is not everything, not even close. Reward comes from giving your best, showing respect to your competitors and celebrating the competition. 4. Focus on what matters. By the way, people are “what matters”. 5. Be fully present and listen intently with an open heart, especially to those who depend on you. They deserve it. 6. You are loved for who you are, not for what you have accomplished. 7. Don’t strive to have things done solely your way. When you open yourself to others’ perspectives, you grow. 8. Make time for your parents. They can teach you a lot and will be gone before you know it. 9. Be generous in all things. Share your time, talents and treasure. There is joy in giving. 10. When you feel down, help someone in need. Both of you will feel better. 11. Be thankful every day. Inventory your blessings. (Bonus) I encourage you to embrace every opportunity, even if, at the moment, you don’t feel like it or think it will be worth your time. Give your best in every activity. Focus on the experience, not the outcome. With God by your side, you will live a full and complete life. #celebrate #relaxation #openminded #embracechange #opportunities #business #inspiration

Equipping OVERCOMERS with brand strategy, brand expansion and brand licensing tools. Consulting | Coaching | Workshops to enable them to compete with the big guys.
What’s your $100,000 idea? 💸 I was so happy to answer that last week when I attended the 10X Vets annual retreat in Naples, Florida. I was asked to speak, alongside fellow veterans, Brett Hadley (MBA, PMP, FACHE, CMRP) , Steve Wingard, Max Sivohins and Donald Pearson,CFP®,ChFC®,RICP®,WMCP® and we were each given 10 minutes to speak on a concept that would earn at least $100,000. That concept was shared with the broader group. I was thrilled to share about how writing my book, Expand, Grow, Thrive landed me multiple speaking engagements, which exceeded the hundred thousand dollar limit. Thank you, Scott Mackes, for posting in your network that this was one of your favorite segments. I think those of us who were up there sharing would agree! As veterans, we are part of a unique and powerful family, and our mission is to lift each other up and continue to support the efforts of our fellow veterans, so sharing about our successes so others might be able to find their own with some of these strategies was especially meaningful to me. #veteran #veteranownedbusiness #entrepreneur

Remember that old saying, “you’re too big for your britches?” I often think of that when I think of building a brand. To me, the grandmas who used to tell that to their grandkids were saying that the child was acting older or showing off more than they had a right to, and it’s not unlike the naysayers who try and tell people that their vision is too big. Who has the right to tell us what is and isn’t right for us? No one has the right to judge the audacity of our dreams. Our dreams belong to us. Remember this when thinking about some of your favorite brands. Imagine how many of them wouldn’t exist today if the person who created that brand believed their dreams were too big to achieve? A brand has to start with one person’s vision. When I came across this story about brand evolution, I immediately thought of one word: audacity. I love that word. Danny Taing started in his living room, stuffing subscription boxes with his mom when he first started out. He had 20 customers. He eventually grew to 200 subscribers, and, fast forward eight years, and he’s got 30,000 subscribers a month! His company is valued at over $100 million, and he is growing his brand universe in remarkable ways, which I’ll touch upon in a future post. If he thought growing from 20 to 200 subscribers was all he could do, he’d never have created a company that brings unique and delicious only-in-Japan artisan snacks to people all over the world. He’s fusing his passion for Japan with his desire to create a business and aligning both with his desire to create a company culture that matters to him. It has taken Danny eight years to achieve these results. Growing a business takes time. There is so much effort needed to germinate an idea. Often, one idea grows into many others we didn’t see at the beginning, when we were steeped in the minutiae of growing something. Have you seen this with your own business? What have you learned about growth and patience in your own journey? https://lnkd.in/e5nE9zzT #entrepreneur #entrepreneurship #subscriptionbox #ecommerce #retail

Read below to learn how #taylorswift built her brand so fearlessly!
Equipping OVERCOMERS with brand strategy, brand expansion and brand licensing tools. Consulting | Coaching | Workshops to enable them to compete with the big guys.
Few have orchestrated their journey to success as masterfully as Taylor Swift. With nearly two decades of music industry domination under her belt, she has crafted a billion-dollar brand identity that has captivated the hearts of a global audience. Not only has her musical prowess and expert storytelling skills helped her forge a highly successful career, but she has also successfully crafted a brand firmly rooted in authenticity. And it’s that authenticity that sells records. Because she positions herself as the opposite of “untouchable” as many celebrities are, she has the gift of relatability. She’s someone who knows she has power, but because she’s not afraid to use her voice to speak out about what she feels is unjust, we trust that she will use her power as an ally – something today’s generation pays close attention to. She’s not afraid to hold others accountable and stand up for those who are treated unfairly or don’t have a voice. She has leveraged her visibility to address social issues, champion equality, and, most notably, advocate for artists’ rights. If you look at the most successful brands out there, you’d see that what they share most in common is that they make their customers feel valued. Taylor does this masterfully by engaging with her fans on social media, meeting with them backstage at events, and even inviting them into her home for informal gatherings featuring cookies, dancing, and reveals of her new music. This personalized touch fosters a strong community that extends beyond her music. We also know that the best brands are addictive, and I can’t think of anyone more addictive than Taylor (though you may argue that Beyonce comes pretty close!). And even better, in this history lesson of Swift’s career, you may recall that her success these last two decades took on many different forms, spanning different musical genres, such that her brand has evolved alongside her. She first hit the scene as a country sweetheart, writing mostly about high school heartbreak and first love. Her authentic storytelling became her trademark through her first country albums. Her inflection point can be seen most clearly in the release of her more edgy album, reputation, which took quite a departure from her previous albums that featured heavy country and pop influences. As her lyrics stated, the old Taylor can’t come to the phone right now… she was busy rebranding! In today’s era, Swift’s brand has matured as she has. And after some legal battles and professional betrayals, she began to take back her reputation, her name and her work by re-recording her songs owned by her previous record label. This paved the way for other artists to defend themselves and take ownership of their work. There’s a lot to learn from Taylor Swift’s story of building her brand. It’s hard not to be enchanted by her work (see what I did there?). She’s a branding expert, and we should all be taking notes from her. #taylorswift #brandidentity #personalbranding
