When Adults Step back, Kids Step Up.

About us

At Let Grow, we believe in kids. We believe they are smart, strong and at least as capable as we were at their age. So why does society insist on bubble-wrapping them? Why are we encouraged to monitor them constantly, in person or with an app, from the day they’re born to the day they leave for college? Why don’t we trust them to do anything safely or successfully on their own? Because of the twin fears stalking modern day parents: Either our kids will be kidnapped and murdered…or they won’t get into Harvard. But in fact, treating today’s kids as remarkably vulnerable is bad for their future, and ours. With a wild and robotic economy coming our way, kids need to be flexible, creative problem solvers. They can’t solve their problems if an adult is always there, solving them first. The winners of tomorrow are comfortable with risk, able to deal with disappointment (even the lack of a trophy), and they do not consider themselves fragile. At Let Grow, we trust kids to screw up, figure things out, screw up some more, and to make their way in the world as every generation has done until now. It is insulting to act as if somehow this particular generation needs more hand-holding, censorship, and coddling than we did. As adults, our job is to prepare our child for the path and then…let go. And Let Grow.

  • 🌟 Why Free Play is Non-Negotiable for Child Development A powerful insight from Jonathan Haidt, Let Grow Co-Founder: Children NEED unstructured play time to develop into resilient, capable adults. Think about it – when kids play freely, they: Learn to resolve conflicts with peers Test their physical limits safely Develop creative problem-solving skills Build emotional resilience through small setbacks Practice decision-making without adult intervention In our well-meaning attempts to protect children from every possible hurt or disappointment, we might actually be preventing them from developing the tools they'll need to handle life's inevitable challenges. Just as a vaccine works by introducing a manageable version of a threat, free play presents children with small, manageable challenges that build their immunity to life's bigger obstacles. Perhaps it's time to step back and let our children play, explore, and yes – even make mistakes. Their future selves will thank us for it. What are your thoughts on free play? How do you balance safety with the need for children to experience small challenges? #ChildDevelopment #Parenting #PlayMatters #LetGrow #Resilience

  • The State of Childhood Independence 🚸 2024 brought both concerning trends and hopeful developments in how we let kids grow and explore. While some stories highlighted excessive restrictions (like a mom arrested for letting her 10-year-old walk in a town of 370 people!), there's encouraging progress too. The good news? The Canadian Pediatric Society now endorses "risky play" as beneficial for children's health. "Independence Therapy" is gaining recognition for treating childhood anxiety. And eight states have passed Reasonable Childhood Independence laws, with more on the horizon for 2025. The question for 2025: Can we find a better balance between protecting our kids and preparing them for life? Here's to hoping more communities will trust children with age-appropriate independence and let them grow! • 🎯 Kids today are monitored 24/7, but does that make them safer - or just less capable? As psychologist Peter Gray points out, we've built a world where children rarely get to play freely without adult supervision. At Let Grow, we know that independent play isn't just fun - it's how kids build confidence, creativity, and resilience. Remember your childhood adventures - climbing trees, making games, solving conflicts with friends. These weren't just cherished memories but learning experiences that helped you grow into a capable adult. Want to give your kids the same opportunity? Start small. Let them walk the dog, play at the park with friends, or ride bikes in the neighborhood. You might be amazed at how they rise to the challenge. Because the truth is, kids are like muscles - they get stronger when we let them stretch. 💪 #LetGrow #FreeRangeKids #ChildDevelopment #IndependentPlay

  • 📚 As schools replace traditional recess with "movement breaks," one mom's story shows why this trend needs a second look. Her 6-year-old son's classroom incident reveals a bigger truth: 3-minute choreographed dance breaks just aren't the same as real, unstructured playtime. While movement breaks can help, they can't replace what kids get from authentic recess: freedom to run, socialize, problem-solve, and truly release energy. Research backs this up – the benefits of unstructured play go far beyond just moving around. The solution isn't either/or. This year, her son has both movement breaks AND three real recesses. The result? A happier kid and no more calls from the principal. Sometimes, the old ways are the best ways. Let kids be kids. 🔍 Read the full story and research at: https://ow.ly/gOJx50UwQ4z #Education #Parenting #ChildDevelopment #SaveRecess #LetGrow #FreePlay
