Two interesting things I learned about prompting yesterday while working with a team in Lega to build an app: 💡 If you put something in ALL CAPS, an LLM will pay more attention to it (perhaps they have learned from US contracts that capitalize critical sections? Or from texts where all caps represent shouting?). ➡ So if there is something you're having difficulty with and you really need the model to pay significant attention to a particular instruction, try putting it in all caps. 💡 Negative prompts are tricky and can have the opposite of the intended effect. In other words, if you tell it not to do something, the model may focus in on the very thing you're telling it to avoid - like a pink elephant! A bit like a toddler: Tell a toddler not to think about cookies, and cookies become their world. AI, much like a toddler, will fixate on the mentioned subject, not the prohibition. ➡ When prompting, instead of telling the model what not to do, reframe the prompt so it's a positive instruction. Example: ❌ Instead of "Don't end the story in a way that is predictable, like 'it was all a dream'", write ✅ "Craft the ending with an unexpected resolution." #GenAI #prompting #AI

Saturday morning's coffee-time reflection: my "PeakGeek" overview of the most interesting things I saw, heard, or learned this week. 🔹 🔹 🔹 🔹 🔹 🔹 🔹 🔹 🔹 🔹 🔹 🔹 🔹 🔹 🔹 1. I got an overview of what's new in Lega, a platform that helps law firms safely deploy AI models, including usage tracking, reporting, and compliance, and that enables firms to easily build AI apps. Particularly cool? 🦄 The Lega Lab allows you to pick and choose from 11 models! An imminent new release may offer hundreds to choose from. 🦄 Ask a question and compare responses from two different models in real time to see which one performs better. 🦄 When building, you have multiple starting point options including replicating a previous app to use it as a template for building another, AND importing a file from Microsoft's Azure studio so you can directly deploy what you've built there using Lega. Christian Lang Rob Saccone 2. I met a lot of founders this week, always fascinating. One of them said that as a lawyer: 🤖 "I was asked to work like a robot; instead I built one." 🤖 3. Sometimes it feels like things come in waves, and it's hard to explain why. I saw three interesting chronology solutions in the past week. There are a lot of new point solutions emerging in the litigation space that do very niche things. 4. Again and again, though, the new companies I've seen with the most potential in the past months share these interesting characteristics: 👨🎓 Founded by students, or young people just out of college 🙃 They might leverage #AI, but functionality is AI adjacency - what do organizations need in order to safely and ethically deploy AI? This is a HOT area with a lot of opportunity. Have a great weekend! #legaltech #legal #weekendupdate

So long #ILTACON, it was great while it lasted but alas, I’m heading back to Boston and back to work on Lega‘s new release. It is always great to catch up with so many friends and colleagues. It’s essentially a family reunion for us “veterans”. Even my (very non-legatech) better half looks forward to this event after so many years. Happy wife evidence attached 😉 Thanks to everyone who stopped by our booth or took time to meet with the Lega team. We received tons of positive reactions and feedback, and we appreciate every bit. I’m very proud of our team and our work, and we’re excited to share our unique approach to balancing speed and safety while innovating with #genai with even more firms and creators. And there is still time to stop by and chat with Christian Lang and Gillian McTiernan at booth 815 today!

It's time for more #GenAI answers and less #GenAI hype. I’ve seen trends repeat themselves over my 25-year tenure in #legaltech. Over the last 18 months, I’ve seen customers and investors write big checks to "get in early” on AI, only to find themselves searching for problems to solve or reinventing wheels that have been turning for decades. From the start I believed in the transformative potential of AI, but felt the market needed more options than astronomically priced RAG-bots, basic chat wrappers, or legions of new Python developers. So, I dug deeper and searched for answers. After several years on the sidelines as an investor and advisor, I needed to get back in the game. Meeting Christian Lang and the team at Lega confirmed that other likeminded pros were building practical solutions, and it was an easy choice to join as CTO and start building together. We then set out to bring together "LLM Apps" and "LLM Ops" in a platform for business users, not just data scientists and coders, where firms can experiment and answer big questions before making big bets.  After months of heads-down, hands-on effort we're excited to preview the new Lega at #ILTACON in just over a week. Our thinking has evolved since Lega's launch a year ago: ✅ We don't fixate on use cases: we give you the tools to create and discover the use cases that work for you, and a growing catalog of curated templates and examples if you need inspiration. ✅ We're provider agnostic: we work with any model, any number of users or use cases, while standardizing access and monitoring across the board. ✅ We provide safety and security at scale by constantly monitoring for compliance with usage, security, and moderation policies that you can define. ✅ Just bring your own keys, your own data, and your own creativity If you're at ILTA and would like to hear more, stop by booth 815 and say hello to me, Christian, or Gillian. Or reach out directly any time. We’d love to chat! CC Haley Altman, Nicole Bradick, Edward Sohn
