About us
At Leader Dogs for the Blind we believe that everyone deserves a life of independence and mobility. All of our services are provided free of charge to our clients, including travel in the U.S. and Canada, room and board, equipment and training. This means that no one is excluded from living their most fulfilling life due to lack of funds. We are 100% philanthropically funded by individual donors, Lions clubs, corporate partners and foundations. Introducing Asher, an instrumental member of our dog care team here at Leader Dogs for the Blind. Asher has been part of the Leader Dog team for two years now. In his previous position at a canine daycare, he met a career changed Leader Dog and learned about our organization's mission. Serendipitously, a position was open in our Canine Development Center and Asher joined the team. "There's always ways to improve things, ways to change processes and freedom to input new processes that are best for our dogs," he says. We are thankful for team members like Asher. Many older adults view vision loss as a natural part of aging. However, eye health and preventative care has no age limit, and it is crucial to continually practice routine eye exams and health checks. Empowering Both Human and Canine Students: The Campus Puppy Raising Model A few months ago, collegiate Leader Dog puppy raisers attended an event for the Abram’s Foundation—they were such great representatives for their schools and Leader Dog. Students from Michigan State University and Oakland University were represented as well as several breeds of Future Leader Dogs. The event was the annual Grantee Celebration that the Abrams Foundation hosts every year to highlight their grantees and allow us to mix and mingle with each other. This event also gave a real-world scenario for the university students to train their puppies in safely and efficiently. The Abrams Foundation was created through the generosity of Talbert and Leota Abrams in the 1960s. Today, 100% of the Foundation Board members are multiple generations of the Abrams’ descendants who focus on creating partnerships with their respective grantees. Leader Dog is proud to have worked with the Abrams Foundation since 2016 and represented the Foundation’s support of Campus Puppy Raisers at the Annual Grantee Celebration. Interested in finding out more about how your foundation can work with Leader Dog? Contact Kathryn Tuck at ktuck@leaderdog.org or Rebecca Weil-Hoskins at Rebecca.Hoskins@leaderdog.org.
