Dual-language programs have proven benefits —boosting academic success, celebrating culture, and preparing students for a global economy. Yet, California - one of the most linguistically diverse states in the nation - has a complicated history with bilingual education. This CalMatters article highlights the progress and challenges, including the leadership of districts like San Bernardino City Unified School District and education champions like Dr. Barbara Flores and the pressing need for systemic investment in teacher training and funding. With only 10% of English learners in bilingual classrooms - compared to 40% in Texas - California still has work to do. At SEAL (Sobrato Early Academic Language), we're proud to partners with education leaders and organizations across the state working to change the narrative in CA. As SEAL's Anya Hurwitz states: "We can’t build capacity without funding and resources." 📖 Read Tara Garcia Mathewson's full article and join us in advocating for a stronger future for multilingual students. This right here is rooted in love, empowerment & healing for all. 🫶🏽 Many have asked what’s next after I receive my doctorate degree & to that I say, it’s an extension of what’s already inside of me & the knowledge I have been building through many years working in the housing industry & now in higher education. My answer: I’m a C.h.o.l.a ~ Championing Housing Ownership as a Latina Academic Hear me out: A Latinas with Masters initiative, La C.h.o.l.a Colectiva was cultivated with both the practitioners & students in mind. As a first-generation Latina who has experienced housing insecurity during college, I personally know the housing landscape our students are experiencing while investing in their education. Both pathways of obtaining an education & securing housing are just as equally challenging: navigating spaces that were not designed for us to obtain & easily accessible to achieve. I’m here to help break generational traumas & cycles of oppression from us obtaining our natural right of having a place to call home. 2025 will bring new housing legislation laws in CA & I’m here to help you understand your rights as tenants & how we can support college students to obtain housing. 2025 is all about intentional change for our community. If you are interested in hosting a workshop at your institution, please feel free to reach out to me directly at lacholacolectiva@gmail.com How you can help: 1. Share this post with your community 2. Hire me to host a workshop series 3. Refer me to a colega at a college/university/non-profit 4. Amplify Latinas with Masters & La C.h.o.l.a Colectiva Doctora Christina Rodríguez & La C.h.o.l.a Colectiva coming soon 2025!!! #LatinaswithMasters #LaCholaColectiva #HousingEducation #LatinaAcademic #sCHOLA #NicaFeminista #MicaFeminism #FutureDoctora #Doctora #LatinasinHigherEducation

Elizabeth Gonzalez, Ph.D. dropping so much knowledge on this episode, tune in!!!
"I literally have this conversation, I feel like every day trying to explain to people that HSI doesn't mean that you give to one group and take away from another. That literally is a conversation that you need to sit down and have with people and explain, no, to focus on one group and to tend to the needs of one group does not mean that you are automatically taking away from another group. It is a very colonial, capitalistic lens of the world, right, like the pie idea…donde come uno, comen dos; donde comen dos, comen tres. To give food to one person does not take away from another" - Dr. Elizabeth Gonzalez, Inaugural HSI Director, UCLA @Hacia_elsol @ginaanngarcia Listen to “HSIs Enacted Across Space & Time” https://lnkd.in/eTGnW73g Apple Podcast: https://lnkd.in/gEPne9bk Spotify: https://lnkd.in/gK5SNJui YouTube: https://lnkd.in/gTzqipzr @ginaanngarcia @ginaanngarcia.bsky.social
