Recycling carbon with biology

About us

Our way of life is built on carbon, from our fuel sources to the materials in our consumer products, but we need a more sustainable way to source it to protect the future of our planet. LanzaTech Global, Inc. is the carbon recycling company transforming waste carbon into sustainable raw materials for everyday products. Using its biorecycling technology, LanzaTech captures carbon-rich gases generated by energy-intensive industries at the source, preventing them from being emitted into the air. LanzaTech then gives that captured carbon a new life as a sustainable replacement for virgin fossil carbon in everything from household cleaners and clothing fibers to packaging and fuels. By partnering with companies across the global supply chain like ArcelorMittal, Zara, H&M Move and Coty, LanzaTech is paving the way for a circular carbon economy.

  • This week Jennifer Holmgren spoke at the #FortuneGlobalForum, and she brought along a #CO2Renu fleece from our partners at Craghoppers as proof of the circular economy in action: yesterday's steel mill emissions to a fleece today. (Link to the fleeces below!) For this session, titled Accelerating the Global Energy Transition, she was joined on stage by Jim Fitterling, Chair & CEO of LanzaTech partner Dow, and Alex Wood Morton, Executive Editor at Fortune. They spoke about the importance of innovation across value chains and leadership role that industry can play in advancing the energy transition we so urgently need. From surfactants and sustainable aviation fuel to apparel and packaging, our most essential products and materials require carbon, and that carbon can from above-ground sources already in circulation rather than extracting more virgin fossil carbon. That's LanzaTech's vision for a circular carbon economy. In case you'd like a Craghoppers fleece: https://lnkd.in/gEYXNVHc #CCU #CCUS #carbonrecycling #energytransition #CO2renu #sustainablefashion

NEWS! Today, with our partner Technip Energies, we announced that the Office of Clean Energy Demonstrations | U.S. Department of Energy (OCED) has awarded our Project SECURE up to $200 million and authorized the initiation of Phase 1. This news comes after first announcing Project SECURE was selected for award negotiations in March 2024. Put simply, we're building a true Power-to-X facility. Project SECURE intends to deploy an integrated commercial process to capture CO2 from ethylene production and, once combined with low carbon intensity H2, recycle them into sustainable ethanol and ethylene. We are aiming for this joint technology solution to first be integrated into an existing commercial ethylene cracker in the U.S. Gulf Coast region, and it has significant replication potential across ethylene crackers worldwide. Today, an estimated 370 ethylene steam crackers are in operation around the world, >40% of which use Technip Energies’s technology, including 8 in the U.S. This translates into significant carbon feedstock efficiency—Project SECURE increases ethylene production without adding more virgin fossil carbon. With a market expected to reach $200 billion by 2030, ethylene is largely recognized as the “world’s most important chemical” because it’s a building block for thousands of applications in essential industries, including plastics, refrigerants, and produce ripening. It's also a key chemical for the future of aviation, as Technip Energies’ technology which converts ethanol to ethylene is also being used in LanzaJet’s Alcohol-to-Jet process to produce sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). Deploying a commercial route for sustainable ethylene production using recycled carbon as a feedstock is ground-breaking for advancing our materials circularity objective and realizing a thriving, enduring circular carbon economy. The OCED’s $200 million award will help fund the design, engineering, construction, and equipment for the commercial-scale integrated technology unit over four phases. Phase 1, representing nearly $20 million of OCED funding, will include conducting a Front-End Engineering Design (FEED) study, developing project plans, providing documentation and reports necessary to complete the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) review, and engaging with local community and labor stakeholders. “Our project not only increases the efficiency and value of existing ethylene production infrastructure but also creates high-quality jobs and supports local communities,” said Jennifer Holmgren, Chair & CEO of LanzaTech. Barges are the new sleighs this December! We're thrilled to announce that we’ve reached an exciting operational milestone with our partner ArcelorMittal, Europe’s largest steel producer. Volumes of ethanol produced from recycled steel mill emissions have ramped to a significant enough level to support large-scale shipping, and our first barge shipment set sail last week out of  the Port of Ghent! This achievement not only marks a significant production milestone but also advances LanzaTech and ArcelorMittal’s joint strategy to develop a thriving European supply chain for sustainable ethanol produced in the region. We’ll be selling ethanol from this barge to LanzaTech CarbonSmart™ customers such as Coty. Steelanol, a first-of-its-kind facility for the European steel industry, uses LanzaTech’s carbon recycling technology to transform carbon-rich industrial emissions from ArcelorMittal Belgium’s blast furnaces into fuel-grade ethanol. This ethanol can be sold directly into fuel markets or further purified or converted for use in a wide array of consumer products such as apparel, personal care, and packaging. With the capacity to produce 80 million liters annually, around half of Belgium's current ethanol demand, Steelanol can reduce carbon emissions by up to 125,000 tonnes annually. “At LanzaTech, our mission is to capture carbon for utilization over and over, ensuring we move away from extracting significant volumes of fossil carbon from the ground. Together with ArcelorMittal, we're proud to take this monumental step towards building an enduring global circular economy,” said our Chair and CEO, Dr. Jennifer Holmgren. We extend our gratitude and congratulations to the dedicated teams at both LanzaTech and ArcelorMittal, and our project partners, Primetals Technologies, E4tech (now part of ERM), and CINEA - European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency for their support. We were honored to receive the Million Pines City Citizen Impact Award from the City of Soperton, Georgia at their annual Christmas party.    This award reflects the deep bond we’ve built with the Soperton community – one that began as a partnership and, as Mayor John Koon so beautifully said, has grown into a family.    In the wake of Hurricane Helene, our Freedom Pines Fuels team stood shoulder to shoulder with our neighbors to help the community recover, providing food, equipment, generators, and support when it was needed most. While presenting the citizen impact award, the mayor highlighted the spirit of collaboration that defined Soperton’s recovery, acknowledging our team’s contributions in helping the community rebuild and move forward.    At LanzaJet, we believe that the communities where we operate are more than Sustainable Aviation Fuel production sites—they’re our home. Soperton is a shining example of how working together creates resilience and a stronger community. One we’re so proud to be a part of.    Thank you to the City of Soperton and Mayor John Koon for this incredible honor, and to our entire Soperton team for your leadership, compassion, and unwavering commitment to the community. A special thank you to Chris White, Gino Welford, and Macayla Dixon for accepting the award on behalf of LanzaJet.    #SAF #cleanfuel #aviation #communityimpact #economicreovery #HurricaneHelene #Georgia
