📣 STAFF SPOTLIGHT: Meet Robert Wayumba, Landesa’s Senior Land Tenure Specialist based in Nairobi, Kenya. Robert began working for Landesa in 2022. 💬 What is the most rewarding part of your work at Landesa? "The most rewarding part of my work is when a widow who had lost her rights to land is reinstated back on her land and granted legal ownership rights over the land. It also very rewarding to see a glimmer in the eyes of duty-bearers during training, when they realize that their efforts and work contribute towards a greater goal of enabling women and other vulnerable members of society to acquire secure rights to land." 👉 Learn more about Robert Wayumba: https://lnkd.in/gZjU3uVK

Reducing global poverty and growing opportunity through the power of land rights.
About us
Landesa partners with governments and local organizations to ensure that rural women and men living in extreme poverty have secure rights over the land they depend on. Founded as the Rural Development Institute in 1981, Landesa has helped more than 720 million people strengthen legal control over their land in the last five years. When people have secure land rights, they can invest in their land to sustainably increase their harvests and reap the benefits—improved nutrition, health, education, resilience, and opportunity—for generations.

What happens to land when an investment ends? A new resource from SMI’s Centre for Social Responsibility in Mining and Landesa explores the concept of land return—a process where companies transfer land back to communities or local governments when investments end. Through the lens of a case study in Tanzania, it highlights: - The motivations behind land return. - Community and company perspectives. - Challenges, risks, and opportunities. -Practical lessons for responsible land transitions. Land is one of the most vital resources for #communities, #economies and ecosystems. Yet, the question of what happens to land at the conclusion of large-scale investments has received far less attention than its initial acquisition. 📚 https://lnkd.in/gNf2C3r3 The resource is produced as part of the Community-Smart Consultation & Consent Project (CSCC) funded by the BHP Foundation and implemented by Landesa in partnership with CSRM, RESOLVE, and Conservation International.

🌍 At #COP29 in Baku, Landesa led a successful side event, "Land Rights for Climate Justice." This impactful event brought together Indigenous leaders, women's and land rights advocates, and global changemakers to discuss: ✅ The critical role of land rights in achieving Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) and sustainable development ✅ The importance of making land rights gender-equitable and inclusive ✅ Amplifying the voices of Indigenous Peoples, youth, and historically excluded groups We also issued a powerful call to action for governments to integrate land rights into their NDCs and for funders to step up with financial support. Big thank yous to all the Indigenous powerhouses, advocates, and participants who joined us. Together, we’re driving the conversation on how secure land rights pave the way for climate justice! 💚 #LandRights #ClimateJustice #GenderEquality #COP29 #SustainableDevelopment

We’re excited to announce the third edition of the Responsible Renewable Energy Summit on 25 February, 2025. Hosted by the Responsible Energy Initiative India, this year’s summit will focus on people-centric business in renewable energy. This edition will highlight how placing people at the center of renewable energy development can help address challenges that have historically hindered large-scale deployment—such as land conflicts, social unrest, and environmental degradation—while driving long-term social and economic benefits for all stakeholders. REI India is a CSO-industry led multi-year, multi-partner programme that enables the renewable energy sector in India to adopt business models and value chains that are people-centric and ecologically positive. 🍃Landesa’s new report, Blue Carbon, highlights the power of mangroves in combating climate change. 💪Through our Coastal Livelihoods and Mangroves Project, we’re strengthening community land rights to protect mangroves, seagrass, and sustainable livelihoods. 🐟 By empowering local community fisheries to manage their coastal ecosystems, we’re helping Cambodia to achieve their Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) goals to combat climate change. ‼️ These efforts across 8 CFis would mitigate over 930,000 tCO2e in 20 years—proof that secure land rights are a critical climate solution! 👉 Read the full report here: https://lnkd.in/g3M5EZHZ #LandRights #ClimateChange #Mangroves #ClimateAction
