Episode 196 of #ConstellationsPodcast is live now! Tune in for a discussion with Russel Van Der Werff about high-altitude platform stations. Listen here: https://lnkd.in/eKzec8r6
While LEO is receiving most of the attention, an emerging technology is rising to the stratosphere: High-Altitude Platform Stations (HAPS). HAPS have the potential to unlock global connectivity, reshape telecommunications, and improve high resolution Earth observation and weather prediction capabilities. LEOs and HAPS are both used for communication, surveillance, and data collection, but they differ greatly in design, functionality, and use cases. To learn more, tune in to the full episode, where we discuss all things HAPS with Russel Van Der Werff, Vice President of the HAPS Alliance and VP of Stratospheric Solutions at Aerostar (Aerostar International LLC). “The overall cost of being a space power has gone down.” A few decades ago, a handful of space powers dominated the globe. Today, dozens of countries around the world have robust satellite programs, driven by rapidly diffusing tech. Tune in to episode 195 of #ConstellationsPodcast to hear Dr. David Hardy talk about the move towards smaller plug-and-play satellites, and how they are powering the modern space age. AI is a popular buzzword in the space and satellite communities, but are realistic and reliable AI capabilities really just around the corner? AI could significantly improve the ability to manage complex satellite maneuvers in large constellations—but AI can also hallucinate, manifest a problem that was never really there, and significantly deter normal operations. These errors are sometimes the result of “garbage in, garbage out” training, and the potential of AI hallucinations contributes to trust issues between satellite operators and AI applications. This year on #Constellations, we spoke with several industry experts about their worries and wishes for artificial intelligence. Check out what they had to say in the carousel below. SpaceX owns and operates 2/3 of all satellites in orbit. Is that a problem? In this article from Space Intel Report, space industry leaders from Eutelsat, Echostar, UNOOSA, and Anatel respond to the overwhelming presence of SpaceX in the satellite industry. While some praise the giant for innovation and low launch costs, others raise concerns about the need for regulation to ensure fair access to space. As Starlink and other mega-constellations continue to grow, so does the tension between technological advancement and the risk of market monopolization. Five years ago, the DoD announced that it would be sharing its space war plans with allied nations for the first time. Since that announcement, news about the new ‘Operation Olympic Defender’ has slowed, until this past fall, when several allies—including the militaries of France, Germany and New Zealand—accepted invitations to join. Much of the initial mission appears to focus on SSA and information sharing, which raises the question: what role, if any, will industry partners play in Olympic Defender?
