I am going to start this post with an admission: my career path was not planned. My biggest opportunities came from pure randomness. That’s how I landed at Microsoft. In a casual conversation a friend mentioned that Microsoft was interviewing nearby. A poorly written email turned into 2 days and 10 rounds of interviews. It was intense. 🥵 I joined Microsoft during the high-growth days of the early 2000s, where the opportunity was limitless. 📈 With zero experience, they threw me into sales and marketing, eventually putting me in charge of large teams and $100M+ businesses. I failed a lot. But I learned more. Three lessons from that time that helped me become a CEO (and that I carry with me every day): 1️⃣ Work with great people that trust you. Microsoft was full of great people, but not just because they were smart and capable, but because they trusted me, gave me responsibility, and let me fail. 2️⃣ Success isn’t just about having a great product — it’s about building a network of partnerships that amplify that product’s impact. Most people don’t know this, but Microsoft’s magic is under the surface where they create strong, long term partnerships across every aspect of their business. 3️⃣ The best career moves aren’t always planned. Be open to random opportunities that you are not ready for. You will figure it out as you go.

Now, getting back to answering the question that I was asked – “How did you become a CEO?”. It started with a humbling, but very valuable experience. Just out of college I started as a Project Engineer at Northrop Grumman, designing advanced surveillance and targeting systems for military aircraft and drones. ✈️ Sounds cool, right? It was. I enjoyed the work, the people, and the products that we built. Why am I highlighting this experience? For 1 reason – Engineering Peer Reviews. Imagine spending months designing a product down to the smallest details and feeling like you did a great job. Then walking into a room to have it publicly dissected by a panel of experts for hours with no agenda besides finding its flaws. 😟 It was brutal and humbling, and I hated it. But here’s the thing — those reviews were invaluable to designing a product that performed well in combat. The panel provided incredible insight based on decades of experience that made the product much better. 🌟 They also made me better. They taught me how to deal with pressure, be open to critical feedback, and solve problems as a team. We all have a tendency to resist direct feedback. It exposes our flaws and makes us uncomfortable. However, it’s critical that we invite and embrace it, especially from people more knowledgeable than ourselves. It’s how we get better. And it was a critical early lesson on my way to becoming a CEO. 🛣️

    Chief Revenue Officer, Strategic Enterprise

Last week, Amy Gagne, RDHEF and I had the privilege of attending the Heartland Dental Winter Conference to support our long-time partner. We’re proud to partner with such an incredible organization that shares our commitment to delivering value to patients nationwide. Earlier in the week, we had the opportunity to hold a productive QBR in St. Louis, where we aligned on goals and future initiatives. It’s always inspiring to collaborate with the Heartland Dental team—they’re dedicated, innovative, and focused on making a real impact. A special thanks to Cheng Y. Rene Gentile Chris Snow Megan Horsch Drew Tedlock Adrian Yu Astra Dean for an incredible week! We left feeling energized about what’s ahead and grateful for the trust Heartland continues to place in us. Here’s to another great year of working together! #HearltandDental #DentalMembership #Teamwork

Like many people, I’m working with my team on plans for 2025. As part of this process someone asked me a very direct question: 🤚 “How did you become a CEO?”. I had never been asked that question before and it made me think a lot about the journey that got me here. I decided to answer that question while completing a personal goal of mine to share more with the LinkedIn community (posting to any social media does not come naturally to me 😰). For better or worse, in the coming weeks I am going to share my journey from engineer at a Fortune 100 company to the CEO of a healthcare start up. The path was not straight and there were more failures than successes. If I had to guess, 25% of the path was defined by successes 🎉 and 75% by trying new things, failing, and figuring things out as I went along 🤔. ⏱️ More to come soon…
