We solve complex transportation problems to improve people's everyday lives.
About us
We solve complex transportation problems to improve people's everyday lives. Whether we’re recommending improvements to a single intersection or helping communities plan for autonomous vehicles, we love tackling transportation challenges through planning, operations, design and research. With people from 19 different countries working in more than 20 offices around the U.S., we still consider ourselves “one office in many locations.” It all started more than 30 years ago, when founding principal Wayne Kittelson realized his dream to create an environment where transportation experts could collaborate through meaningful work, empower their communities and grow as individuals. While we’ve expanded since then, our unwavering values have always guided our approach. Kittelson's strength draws from our connectedness as a firm. Our offices work together seamlessly and collaboratively, allowing staff to share perspectives and discover new and innovative solutions for the clients and communities we serve. We invite you to learn more about the people who are the lifeblood of this vibrant firm, as well as the challenges they are tackling in the world of transportation by connecting with us via LinkedIn or through the other social media outlets we use. We also encourage you to explore our extensive website to understand the values we hold true. We look forward to collaborating with you!

Happy Friday, everyone! Please join me in welcoming two new team members: Mikayla Montoya and Pavithran B. ⭐ ⭐ Mikayla Montoya began her career as a traffic engineer and transportation planner. While working in transportation, she pursued a degree in graphic design at San Diego City College. She has a strong interest in transportation and loves to combine her two backgrounds. She enjoys creating technical infographics, maps, and figures as well as designing in branding, page layouts, and presentations. In her free time, she enjoys rock climbing and playing in a local pep band. ⭐ Pavithran Balan earned his master's degree in city and regional planning from Rutgers University, where he also obtained a transportation certificate. Pavithran is interested in understanding transportation needs from a community perspective and finding data-driven solutions that create sustainable, safe communities. Outside of work, Pavithran enjoys watching and playing outdoor sports, travelling, biking, and hiking.

We’re excited to continue supporting quick-build bus priority infrastructure, like the new 2nd Street bus lanes used by Route 104 in Boston, to improve connectivity and service for the communities we live in. Bus networks are a vital part of creating more reliable and accessible transportation systems. 🌐 Congratulations to MBTA and their partners for launching Bus Network Redesign Phase 1! 🎉
"Bus Network Redesign was the result of dedication and communication from our MBTA’s BNR team, supporting T departments, and our community and municipal partners, who have worked with a shared goal to improve connectivity and service. Our bus network is a key component of our system and with the leadership of Governor Healey and the support of the Legislature, we are rebuilding our workforce allowing us to restore and enhance bus service. As part of this initial launch, we’re working hard to inform riders of the improvements coming from these changes. I thank our staff and the many volunteers that have devoted time to meeting directly with riders to prepare for this launch,” said General Manager and CEO Phillip Eng. “Boston communities and surrounding cities deserve more reliable and accessible transportation, and we are committed to deliver that for them.” This morning, General Manager Eng rode the new Route 104 along with MassDOT Undersecretary Morrison, Massport CEO Davey, local officials, and MBTA staff to celebrate the implementation of Bus Network Redesign - Phase 1. Route 104 is now a Frequent Bus Route with service every 15 minutes or better and crosstown connections between Malden Center, Everett, Chelsea, and Airport station. We're an interconnected nationwide team, but we each have our own reasons for being passionate about the work we do! This month, learn about Benazir Portal and how she's turning signals into solutions. Benazir was recently awarded the 2024 South Florida ITE Private Sector Professional of the Year! 🏆 Benazir's work focuses on traffic operations and safety problem-solving. She says the most rewarding part of her work is seeing the safety and operations countermeasures she recommended on the ground. Benazir finds her work incredibly fulfilling and loves showing her family the projects she's contributed to in Florida. 💡 “The feeling of seeing your contributions shape projects and improve communities in meaningful ways, is hard to describe—it’s a deep source of pride and joy.” ⭐ https://lnkd.in/g3EtrqnZ

This week we connected with professionals in our industry and discussed important issues in transportation today at the Transportation Engineering and Safety Conference (TESC). ✅ Here are some of our own session highlights: 💰 Jeff Riegner introduced the Safe Streets and Roads for All program and explained how communities in Pennsylvania are using the funding for their safety action plans. 🚀 Glenn Rowe participated in a panel discussing the past and present of PennDOT Highway Safety and Traffic, and where mobility and safety are heading in the future. 💭 Conor Semler provided an overview of the 24-hour capacity framework and explained how we can broaden our view of road design and evaluate how corridors operate outside of the traditional peak hour view of a traffic engineer. 📝 Andy Duerr moderated and @Andrew Thompson presented in a session called "Model as a Legal Document (MALD) in PA," highlighting two MALD pilot projects. 🛠️ Alexandra Jahnle, introduced PennDOT's upcoming LaneEval Tool, which helps promote safer work zones. ⚡ Laura Ahramjian, AICP moderated a session on how the City of Philadelphia piloted and expanded automated speed enforcement to reduce vehicle speeds, decrease the number of fatal and severe crashes and meet Vision Zero goals. We’re grateful for the chance to learn, share, and collaborate with industry leaders at TESC—looking forward to applying these insights to advance safer, more efficient transportation systems! 💡
