Informing policy. Improving health.
About us
The Kansas Health Institute supports effective policymaking through nonpartisan research, education and engagement. KHI believes evidence-based information, objective analysis and civil dialogue enable policy leaders to be champions for a healthier Kansas. Established in 1995 with a multiyear grant from the Kansas Health Foundation, KHI is a nonprofit, nonpartisan educational organization based in Topeka. The Kansas Health Foundation made its commitment to fund KHI's educational mission to deliver in-depth, nonpartisan information, research and insights based on the conclusion that health policy decisions often were based on fragmented, anecdotal and sometimes biased information. At the time of its founding, KHI was unique in its status as a health policy-focused educational organization that was independent, non-university based and supported primarily through philanthropy. Since then, other states such as Colorado and Ohio have established institutes with a similar model. KHI faculty and staff are drawn from diverse disciplines including medicine, public and community health, health policy and management, law, statistics, data management, anthropology, political science, sociology, health administration, communications and business. KHI continues to be supported by a core-operating grant from the Kansas Health Foundation, and also obtains funding from other regional and national foundations and state and federal agencies. Our Vision: Healthier Kansans through effective policy. Our Mission: Improve the health of Kansans through non-partisan research, education and engagement that support effective policymaking.

One in 10 (12%) Kansas households lack broadband internet access. Among low-income Kansans, those living in households making less than $20,000 annually, nearly one-third (30.9%) do not have broadband. The Kansas Health Institute’s Digital Divide Dashboard offers a detailed look at broadband and computer access across the state. It highlights disparities in availability and ownership, helping communities focus efforts to close the gap. In today’s digital age, access to reliable internet and devices is critical for education, employment and health care. However, the digital divide remains a major challenge, particularly in rural areas. 🔗 Learn more and explore the dashboard: https://lnkd.in/gJw_C7TE #KSLeg #KSHealth #BroadbandAccess #DigitalDivide REACH Healthcare Foundation | United Methodist Health Ministry Fund

At KHI, engaging with students and fostering their growth in health policy has always been a top priority. We're grateful for the opportunity to have our colleagues share their expertise as guest lecturers, helping to inspire and build the next generation of leaders in the field. #HealthInAllPolicies #HiAP #KsHealth
It was a joy to return to Vicki Collie-Akers classroom for a guest lecture and engage MPH students on incorporating #health into #policies and decisions. Thanks for the invite! We’re excited to see students infuse Health in All Policies (HiAP) into decision-making across sectors as they continue their journey to becoming change-makers. We guided students through the Health Impact Checklist Tool https://lnkd.in/gErHjT6e, which recently received the 2024 Best in Show PRISM Award from the PRSA Greater Kansas City Chapter https://lnkd.in/gWBeuu2q. It was an honor to co-author this tool with Wyatt Beckman, and thanks to the Kansas Health Institute communications team for designing it. #HiAP work takes many champions, and today I want to acknowledge those who have worked on #HIAs or HiAP and laid the foundation for this work in Kansas and beyond. Special thanks to Catherine Shoults, PhD MPH Caitlin McMurtry Carlie Houchen Ivan Williams Sheena Schmidt (Smith) Sarah Hartsig Shawna Lee Carroll Chapman Barbara LaClair Lisa Jones Sarah Green Sharon Homan Samiyah Para-Cremer Moore, SOPHIA and Health Impact Project. Also, thank you to Bob St. Peter for his past support and to Kari Bruffett for her continued support of this work at KHI. Let’s share this award together!
