  • Securing the right investment can be tough, but it’s not just about competing with other businesses; it’s about understanding that you’re up against options like government bonds. As Dean Gichukie shared, many funding sources are expensive because of this competition, and entrepreneurs must be strategic about how they seek capital. He advises against locking yourself into traditional bank loans, especially if your business is still in its early stages. Instead, Dean encourages diversifying funding by seeking smaller amounts from various sources like friends, family, or credit unions. This approach can reduce risks and increase your chances of securing the funds needed to grow. Dean’s insights challenge entrepreneurs to rethink how they approach funding and to explore creative, sustainable strategies that set them up for long-term success. • How can entrepreneurs secure the right funding for innovation? Securing funding isn’t just about having a great idea; it’s about understanding the priorities of potential funders. Loise Asewe Ochanda shed light on this during our recent webinar, explaining how funders often tie their investments to predefined objectives, asking, “How does this project align with our strategic goals?” To navigate this landscape, Loise emphasised the importance of mapping out different types of funders: those investing in societal challenges, seed funding for prototypes, or scaling impactful innovations. She also highlighted the role of public funding agencies that prioritize inclusivity and societal impact over commercial viability. At #KasiAfrique, we aim to equip entrepreneurs with the tools and insights they need to align their innovations with the right funding opportunities, driving meaningful change across Africa. #ScaleUpAfrica #BusinessGrowth #Entrepreneurship #AfricanBusinesses

What’s holding back Africa’s SMEs? During our recent webinar “Is It Time to Rethink Africa's Scale-Up Financing?”, Gilbert Manirakiza highlighted one of the biggest hurdles for entrepreneurs in sub-Saharan Africa: the lack of knowledge and funding needed to meet today’s overwhelming expectations. Entrepreneurs are expected to be everything at once: financially sound, climate-friendly, and socially responsible, yet many lack the resources to achieve this. In addition, there are steep barriers to accessing affordable credit, and the path to scaling up becomes even more challenging. Gilbert’s advice? Be strategic. Not all funding is created equal. Entrepreneurs must evaluate every opportunity holistically, considering more than just the financial cost. At #KasiAfrique, our mission is to equip entrepreneurs with the tools, knowledge, and networks they need to navigate these challenges and build sustainable businesses. Gilbert’s reflections challenge us all to rethink how we empower Africa’s business leaders and create sustainable pathways for growth. #ScaleUpAfrica #BusinessGrowth #Entrepreneurship #AfricanBusinesses

Scale, Scale, Scale! This is one of the keys to unlocking Africa's job creation potential. However, we know that Financing for scale-ready SMEs is one of the critical enablers of Scale. That said, Financing types and sources are not created equal, and some will even drive companies to implosion, as we can see in the growing post-financing company graveyard in Africa. Having scaled and operated companies in 30 markets, and engaged with several VCs and M&E processes, I am thrilled that I will get to share some insights tomorrow, alsongside my brilliant co-panelists, Dean Gichukie and Loise Asewe Ochanda, at this webinar convened by Kasi Afrique. #GoBigOrGoBigger #MastersOfScale #Africa
