About us

Kampgrounds of America Inc. (KOA) is the world’s largest family camping company, helping family and friends enjoy the great outdoors for 55 years. Founded in 1962, our franchising company has more than 500 campground locations across North America, and each year is nationally recognized for our work in public relations, marketing and franchise satisfaction. From our humble beginnings on the banks of the Yellowstone River in Billings, Montana, KOA has become an iconic brand throughout the U.S. and Canada. Our “Yellow Sign” acts as a beacon of fun and relaxation for campers, and a badge of honor for our employees. We value hospitality, the great outdoors and the people and places that make our company great. Camping has come a along way since the early days of canvass tents and rustic roadside camps. The team at Kampgrounds of America prides itself on constant innovation - bringing new technologies, advanced guest service training and luxury accommodations to camping in order to dial up the outdoor experience for our guests. Whether introducing Deluxe Cabins to building proprietary reservation technology, KOA is leading innovation in the outdoor hospitality industry. Our strategic thinking and business decisions are driven by data and research. Furthermore, we are committed to reducing our environmental footprint, promoting our Kamp Green program to help our franchisees keep the great outdoors great, for generations to come. KOA offers employment opportunities in both our corporate operation - still headquartered in Blllings, Montana - and our various franchise locations. • Over the past decade, camping has evolved from a simple outdoor pastime to encompass a wide range of hospitality offerings catering to preferences from rugged wilderness adventures to luxurious glamping retreats. This growth has positively impacted the outdoor hospitality industry and the economies in which it operates. 💲In the past year, campers increased their average daily spending by $28 per camper per day on their trips. In all, campers spent about $49 billion in local communities. 🔄 90% of campers are adjusting their trips based on the economy. • In late 2023, Kampgrounds of America, Inc. developed the first accessibility in camping report to better understand and provide solutions to campers with physical or neurodivergent needs. This report, the ninth of our Camping & Outdoor Hospitality Report series, is a collaboration of 2023’s data and more recent findings from our Quarterly Research completed in 2024. ⛺ The average camper with a disability spends about one more night camping than all other campers and is slightly more likely to take three or more camping trips annually. 👨👩👦 The incidence of self-identified neurodivergence among campers is around 30%. About half of all camping travel groups include someone who is considered neurodivergent, well above the rate observed among other types of leisure travelers. 👨👩👦 The use of technology is more prominent among campers with disabilities, including more than half (53%) who say that technology impacts their ability to camp more often.
