As we ease into the new year, we are pleased to reflect on the growing impact JVS made in 2024 and share some more remarkable numbers. Compared to the same period in our previous fiscal year, we trained 984 people, marking a 54% increase. These individuals learned new job skills leading to licensure and certification in the following training programs provided by our Center for Economic Opportunity: • Certified Home Health Aide Training [depicted in the photo] • Certified Pharmacy Technician Training • Certified Pharmacy Technician Training for people for whom English is not a first language • Certified Apartment Maintenance Technician This year, we will also introduce a Certified Nursing Assistant program, a role that is much in demand in hospitals and other healthcare facilities. “Today marks a new beginning for us all,” said Ebony proudly addressing her classmates and about 50 family and friends who had gathered to celebrate. “It is a special occasion that signifies a great accomplishment in our academic journey.” Ebony is one of 14 individuals who graduated on Friday from the JVS Pharmacy Technician program. They are now prepared to launch their careers in a new field. The program wasn’t easy — 120 hours of classroom instruction and 100 hours of externship, all while balancing life’s other commitments and challenges. “I speak for all of us when I say this was no easy task,” she continued. “This moment right here, right now is a testament to what can happen when you keep your focus and never lose sight of the vision. JVS gave me the boost of encouragement I needed to keep going.” “Now I stand before you as a registered pharmacy technician in hospital pharmacy at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center!” While the audience cheered, she cried, “I got the job, y’all!” Ebony thanked JVS. For a parent during the holidays, there is nothing better than seeing their child’s face light up after opening a present. Buying and wrapping those presents, however, requires time and money – privileges that can be out of reach for refugee families newly arrived in the U.S. In recent weeks, JVS held a toy drive for the children of refugees, ESL students, and Adult Basic Education students, and yesterday in East Orange, case managers presented the toys to parents to select and wrap. Each parent left with arms full of gifts for their children.
