About us

John Varvatos is a brand that occupies a unique place in the landscape of American design. It unites old world craftsmanship and refined tailoring with modern innovations in textiles and a rock ‘n’ roll sensibility. Launched in 2000 with a collection of tailored clothing and sportswear, the brand now represents an entire lifestyle that includes belts, bags, footwear, eyewear, limited edition watches and fragrances as well as the younger, edgier John Varvatos Star USA collection. A wildly successful collaboration with Converse gave rise to reinterpreted versions of the classic Chuck Taylor All Star and Jack Purcell sneakers, including the creation of the John Varvatos Laceless Chuck Taylor. Inspired by the passion, creative spirit and deeply original style of talented musicians, John Varvatos credits his early obsession with rock ‘n roll as the catalyst for his interest in fashion. A unifying theme in his design, it is deeply ingrained in all his efforts and evident in every expression of the brand. The memorable ad campaigns for the main collection—shot by Grammy-nominated music documentarian Danny Clinch—have featured such legendary icons as Iggy Pop, Alice Cooper, Jimmy Page, Velvet Revolver and Willie Nelson. These strong characters and their eclectic personal styles lend a fresh perspective and timeless relevance to John Varvatos’ authentically detailed clothes. Music is also central to the brand’s philanthropic efforts, including the annual Stuart House Benefit concert that raises money for the treatment of sexually abused children. What began as a small in-store event in Los Angeles 14 years ago has become an outdoor concert that closes down Melrose Avenue. Past years have featured Cheap Trick, ZZ Top, Dave Matthews, as well as Steven Tyler and Joe Perry of Aerosmith. John Varvatos has been recognized by the CFDA with the Perry Ellis Award for New Menswear Designer in 2000, and as Menswear Designer of the Year in 2001 and 2005. In December 2007, he was named GQ magazine’s “Designer of the Year” for its 12th annual “Men of the Year” issue. He was honored as Menswear Designer of the Year at the 10th Annual Style Awards in September 2013. In October 2013 John released his first book entitled, John Varvatos: Rock in Fashion, which documents the elements of rock style that have embodied the music community for decades. In February 2014, John Varvatos entered into a strategic partnership with Republic Records and launched John Varvatos Records. In 2015, John received several accolades including Most Innovative at MR Magazine’s MR Awards Honoring Game Changers in the Menswear Industry, The Cultural Icon Award at the T.J. Martell Foundation’s 40th Anniversary Gala, the ACE Award for “Designer of the Year” given by The Accessories Council, which was particularly important because it was the first time they recognized a men’s only designer, and the Fashion Cares award given by the Samuel Waxman Foundation. The collection is currently distributed in freestanding John Varvatos stores across the US including the 315 Bowery boutique in the space that formerly housed the seminal underground music club CBGB. In addition, the collection is available online, in luxury retail stores and better specialty boutiques throughout the world. • Across our brand, we have so many talented individuals bringing creativity to their roles everyday, pushing the boundaries of what we can achieve when we collaborate together. Visual Merchandising Manager, craig peters has been on a tour across our North America store locations over the past month, working with our store teams to elevate their floor sets so we can provide inspirational shopping experiences for visiting clients this holiday season. Hear a bit more about his role below. What does your role entail at John Varvatos? “I have worked at John Varvatos for over 7 years. I currently work as Visual Merchandising (VM) Manager overseeing the VM for our North America West Coast full price stores and outlets; as well as our London store and Asia concession locations. I create our full price VM directives within our London store, working alongside the VM director and creative director for styling. In addition, I manage the London and Milan showrooms, as well as supporting various departments within the brand; including ECOMM, marketing and merchandising.” Tell us about your support for our stores this holiday season? “During the holiday season I visited our stores all across the US to help support our retail teams during our busiest period. I implemented the December VM directive alongside the teams in each location, where we focused on gifting and key categories; as well as updating our holiday window which I had the privilege to design this year.” What steps do you take to showcase our product to its best? “When doing a floor set  I like to make sure I have a clear plan in place and give each member of the team an area to focus on, i.e. tables, rails or mannequins. This also gives me the opportunity to partner with the General Manager to make sure that their store is set up for success. Once completed I do a final walk through, making adjustments so that the store feels visually engaging for the customer and also for our teams, so that selling is fun and easy when building outfits and driving UPT.”

  • In mid-November, our Conduit Street store hosted a special event to celebrate our Resort 2024 collection. In the environs of our London flagship, guests were treated to an intimate, acoustic set by renowned Icelandic group, Kaleo and invited to explore our winter collection. We loved getting the opportunity to catch up with new and familiar faces that included valued clients, friends of the brand, stylists and fashion editors.  Thanks go to Philipe Adam, Bahram Majd and the Conduit Street team for hosting everyone in their beautiful store, craig peters for the curation of the floorset and James Schuck, Kevin Naraine, Brandon Walden and Laura Nicholas for all their efforts in putting together such a memorable event. We’re looking forward to a special holiday season ahead – this was the perfect way to start it.

  • In October, we opened our doors in New York’s recently opened premium outlet location, Belmont Park Village This open-air shopping and leisure village provides an exclusive new retail destination to Long Island that we’re so excited to be a part of. Our new location embodies our alternative luxury aesthetic with a curated product range including plenty of iconic JV lines and previous season favorites. New store openings are always a team effort and this one was no different - our retail operations, merchandising, technology, visual merchandising, store design, people and culture and distribution centre colleagues all collaborated and contributed towards getting us to opening day. We also have an incredible new Belmont Park Village team who played a huge part in our set up and have been welcoming clients ever since to this new location. As Belmont Park Village continues its rolling opening, we’re so happy to be here at the start of the Village's story and look forward to welcoming clients across the upcoming holiday season and beyond.

  • Last week, we welcomed our General Managers (GMs) to New York for our annual GM Summit. The event started off with a welcome party at our iconic Bowery flagship. We’re proud to have so many long standing JV team members and wanted to get a visual representation of what this looked like on the day, so we asked all GMs to stand in a line in order of tenure. We had an amazing 112 years of tenure combined as well as 47 years from our expert tailors. The event continued across Tuesday - Thursday where GMs enjoyed presentations from our people and culture, production and design teams. We were also delighted to have CEO, Peter Wood and COO, Catherine Scorey Jobling join to host sessions celebrating our brand values – respect, resolve, ratified passion and refinement. We discussed how these influence our brand, us as leaders and contribute to ours and our team’s growth. Across the event, GMs learnt more about our product from the teams who designed it, got to see a preview of our upcoming collections and dug deeper into our strategy for this year and beyond. It also provided a special opportunity to connect with new and familiar faces and to celebrate the connecting thread we’re all so passionate about, our brand. This week, GMs will take their summit reflections back to their teams as we gear up for our busiest trading weeks of the year. With new connections made, our plan clear and our product package leaving us all inspired, we’re looking forward to a special season ahead.

  • We’ve been celebrating the incredible women we have at John Varvatos across March and learning about the people who inspire them. Today, hear from Senior Manager Customer Experience, Caroline Villamar 'Who is your biggest inspiration and why?' “My biggest inspirations are my parents. Being raised by immigrant parents had its fair share of challenges, from reading documents I was not qualified to read in elementary school and the countless times I pretended to be my mom on the phone with the cable company. However, as an adult I have come to realize how many lessons I learned and how much they have motivated me, and continue to motivate me, to work hard and reach my goals. One of the most important lessons they have shown me is that sometimes you have to do things scared and have faith that it will work out for the best. Coming to a new country, not speaking the language, and not knowing if things would work out is by far the scariest thing they have ever done but they handled every challenge with grace and faith knowing that they made the right decision for our family. This is not to say they ever led me to believe that your goals and dreams come true by faith alone. Growing up I saw my parents work extremely hard. They demonstrated how far you can get if you focus on your goals, have a plan, are dedicated and reliable. I truly believe that it is because of the example that they set for me that I have done my best to excel in any role I take on, always strive for a new challenge and keep my eyes on what the next step is in my growth. Now, as I see my parents enter the next phase of their life, retirement – they continue to inspire me for new reasons. I see the emphasis they place on enjoying the fruits of their labor, always putting family first and making memories every chance they get. I am inspired by their journey, their growth, and for simply put, being the very best they could be for their children.”

  • On April 1st we’ll be releasing our brand new scent, John Varvatos XX Intense. At the end of February we hosted a private dining experience at Bar Sprezzatura in San Francisco to introduce the fragrance and celebrate the launch. The event was part of Bar Spezzatura’s Tastemaker series which highlights the intersection of food and drink with fashion, music, art and culture. The eau de parfum features top-notes of red ginger flower accord, bergamot and verbena. Mid-notes include cyclamen, geranium and damascone with base-notes of tonka bean, roasted coffee and cedarwood. The menu mirrored the elevated notes of the fragrance by featuring rich, earthy ingredients and fresh shaved black truffle. Our team Laura Nicholas James Schuck Kevin Naraine loved being a part of such an eclectic event and introducing our brand and fragrance to such an inspiring audience.
